Title: What were the original nuts used on the '69 rear spoiler

While at the Camaro Nationals a couple of weeks ago, I got into a discussion with a very low mileage COPO owner
regarding the original nuts ( and washers? ) used to affix the rear spoiler. His car had domed-head nuts vs. the
standard nuts I've often seen. I honestly never gave this much thought. The owner of this car also thought that
possibly early Camaro's used these different different nuts vs. what was used on the later production cars. Can any
of you confirm this for me?

As always, it would be nice to see some images to go with the dialog.

Post by: JohnZ on July 09, 2006, 02:13:31 PM: My unmolested original 02D Norwood Z/28 with factory D80 has domed "acorn" nuts across the rear, and hex nuts with integral conical washers across the front - photo below. :)

Post by: JohnZ on July 10, 2006, 02:27:13 PM: Mine has never been off the car, so I don't know if it has sealing washers between the spoiler and the deck lid surface or not; the hex nuts with conical washers securing the front edge do have sealing washers on them, which were integral with the nut.

It had no acorn nuts, all were the gold finish open nuts with the integral washers as are on the front side of JohnZ's spoilers. I went with new spoiler hardware, the acorn style, so I should still have the originals. I'll find them.

Heres the only before pic I have of that area. Not very detailied pic, but too large to be acorns:

Post by: Dave69x33 on July 12, 2006, 03:50:39 PM: According to Jerry MacNeish and his documented research, the D80 spoiler package became a mandatory Z28 option, with a price increase on April 1, 1969. According to my discussions with Larry Christenson, well known for his 1st Gen restorations and overall knowledge of them (he has had numerous unrestored 69's, plus his #1 of two actual 1969 Pace Car is pictured in Jerry's book, The Definitive 1969 Camaro Z28-SS396 Fact Book, on page 185) the tall "acorn" nuts were changed to Kelp nuts with integrated washer, approx. the first week of May 1969. Thus, it can be assumed that the switch was made about this time.

You can buy these along with many other GM NOS hardware from AMK Products (www.amkproducts.com). The part number of this nut is 4821091 (w/sealer) or 4821092. I have an 05A 69 RS Z28 that had the original Kelp nuts on it and I replace with AMK NOS pieces. You can see pictures of the hardware on AMK Web site.

Well, not exacty. Dave69x33 mentions that the acorn nuts were dropped in favor of the integrated washer kelp nuts around May. Seeing how the nuts I posted the pic of are off of an 07A car, makes sense.

Post by: enio45 on July 16, 2006, 06:57:23 AM: JohnZ......in your pic, the tabs on the trunk lip.....it looks like 68 style vs the 69. Have you noticed this?? I'm not an expert but thought the 69's trunk lips were smooth edge without the tabs? What do yo u think?

Post by: Dave69x33 on July 29, 2006, 02:20:54 PM: Hello everyone. Just logged on to see the latest discussion on spoiler hardware and noticed I mistakenly called the nuts "Kelp" nuts. They are called Kep Nuts. I failed to mention that the Kep nuts are also used to secure the window regulators to the inner door and rear quarter panels. If recall correctly, the front window regulators Kep nuts are the same ¼-20 size as the spoiler.

If anyone has any sort of Fisher Body Assembly Manual (not the Chevrolet final assembly plant manual), please let me know if the rear spoiler and window regulator hardware part numbers are called out.
