My 68 has a misstamp on the cowl. Has anyone seen this before? It should read 8l341406

Yes, it happened once in awhile.
If you looks close, it appears the cowl has 18L341406 with a 1 struck above the 0. Can you get a clearer picture of the cowl stamping?

Yes, going by the pictures, they match. If you look carefully at the heater box location (Upper picture below), you'll see that the last three digits are 406 with the 4 and 0 being lower than the rest of the VIN. On the cowl (lower picture below), what I thought was a 1 next to the 6 is actually the dividing line of the stamp.
The cowl was stamped lighter than the heater box, so that's why it's hard to make out.

A stamping of this nature isn't unusual - the rotating segments of the "egg" stamper didn't index fully or mis-indexed from stamping the previous car's partial VIN.
