Title: August 1969 Norwood Production
Post by: jdv69z on January 13, 2011, 09:03:14 PM
A few questions out of curiosity regarding August 1969 production at Norwood:

Was there a halt to car production for a model year change over? Like the first two weeks of August? Which would mean no cars would have a trim tag with 08A or 08B?

When production resumed, Model Year 1969 Camaros were being produced along with Model Year 1970 Firebirds?

Both models would have shared Fisher body numbers? ie Hypothetically Body #NOR105000 could be a Camaro while Body #NOR105001 could be a Firebird?

Maybe too much time on my hands?

I've wasted a bunch of time on this myself.

There was no shutdown but production was much lower for July & August, typically a slow time for the plants. Also at that point it may not have been known that '70 model launch would be delayed. So they may have started with the '70 changeover.

Firebird NOR body numbers started with 5 and 7 I believe. I wouldn't be concerned with trim tag dates as they routinely omitted weeks.

69 Camaros and 69 Firebirds both had the extended production (til 11A).

Firebirds used different body #'s than Camaros in both 69 and 70.

I guess what got me started thinking about this was the fact that there were approx 211,000 Camaros produced at Norwood, (VIN's 500,00 thru approx 711,000) But Body numbers go from 104,000 to 377,000; then start again at 102,000 and go to approx 160,000. Almost 300,000 body numbers. (Correct me if my numbers are off). That's a lot more body numbers that cars produced. Why is that?

Oops! So the same body numbers were used for LA cars as well. Well that accounts for another 31,000 or so. Making more sense now.
