hi guys- i've had this on the restoration board, maybe it more appropriately belongs here- anybody have any suggestions? Tranny- 4 speed Saginaw / shifter- Muncie. History- tranny rebuilt by mech due to worn synchros. Reinstalled and wouldn’t go into 3rd from 2nd sometimes. Otherwise worked good. Mech and now tranny guy suspected something wrong with rebuild kit synchros. Tranny guy rebuilt again with new parts kit. Reinstalled and worked fine except made clunk or klink noise shifting out of 2nd at any speed. Tranny guy rebuilt again with new kit/different vendor; making sure was reassembled correctly. Parts that came out looked new. Reinstalled and made same noise coming out of 2nd (maybe more pronounced). Additionly, if shifted out of 2nd at high speed now has whirring noise (something in tranny spinning??). mech and tranny guys not sure why this is happening. Assume the insides of the tranny are correct. Am not sure how the mech adjusted the shift linkage- used pin to line up the neutral grooves in the shift sectors or used gage in the slot? Does this make a difference- appears to line up either way? Anybody seen this before / any suggestions? Mech is willing to try most anything to fix. Thanks- COflyer67

I'm not a tranny guy but sounds like 2nd and/or 3rd gears are shot. The syncros mate to the cone on the gears to match the speed so the engagement is smooth. If the gears are worn where the synchros meet you can have hard engagement/clunks/whirring noise. Second gear takes a lot of abuse on those powershifts!!! See what others say though first. Good Luck-hope you get it figured out.

thanks chris- will add that to the list of possibles. however, the tranny guy has been into the rebuild twice now and sez the insides look good. cheers- pete
