Title: 1966 Van Nuys Plant shutdown?
Post by: Butternut1967 on October 21, 2024, 04:55:52 AM
Wondering if anyone knows a reason why no cars were build November third and fourth weeks in 1966? I have an 11A built car that I think may not have shipped until 11E based on upholstery tag for fold down seat.

It appears there were more VN Camaros built in Nov. 66, than either Oct. or Dec. Seems unlikely there was a shut down, but I don't know that as fact.

They were built those weeks.  There are known trim tag abnormalities for first gens.

Thank you. Wondering why there were way more build 11A, 11B, 11E compared to 11C and 11D?
I'm asking because my 11A car with a fold down seat has the passenger side floor bracket for the fold down seat welded in (as they were) but the driver's side bracket is screwed in. Also there is a factory upholstery tag in the lower seat section with an end of November date on it. Trying to figure out if it sat around the plant for several weeks.

Can you post a pic of the seat tag?

Not Likely that "it sat around the plant for several weeks". The main thing that GM wanted was to get cars out of production and into dealerships. I'm sure the plants did everything possible to get cars out asap.

Any evidence that it was damaged, or the floor pan in that area replaced at some point? Seems the later seat bottom and bracket using fasteners might be related.

No floor is perfect condition original. I think they didn't have one side bracket, moved it along the line, then screwed a bracket in when it arrived. I also agree GM didn't want cars hanging around. I sent pictures of the tag to Byron, but the tag is so difficult to read now. Thinking about it now, maybe the seat had the wrong tag. Maybe it was tagged wrong. I'll never know. Thanks for your help.

Agreed. There was no room in the plant for cars to be stored.
They wouldn't have scheduled the car if they didn't have the parts. More likely it was missed in Fisher and corrected when the seat was installed.

If the seat date was correct, there is no way the seat was original. Your car was completed in early November as indicated by the NCRS shipping information production date.

So if the seat is original, the tag was not a late November date.  Or the seat was replaced at some point - possibly by the dealership.
