What the heck? Why is the console connector 5 feet long. I could run this around the dash twice and still have enough to reach connector. LOL
-
It’s a good question. I suppose the wiring harness gods would know. Looks pretty.
-
They did that in case you wanted to put the console in the trunk!!
Seriously, who made your harness? When we installed the Lectric Limited harness in my 68, it was a perfect fit.
Ed

Yea, it's crazy long. It was made by American Autowire. Part# CA85064
-
I'd contact them and get the right length.
-
Whomever made that harness must’ve been getting paid by the foot. As Ed said….Lectric.
-
That's not right. I purchased and installed that harness from them for my 69 and it fit perfect. Call them, I found them to have excellent customer service. Maybe it was someone that just started there and didn't know any better but wanted to make sure you had enough wire!
-
Apparently it was not a mistake. Check the picture on American Autowire page.

It was made for back seat drivers. My AAW console wiring was just right in lenght.
-
Back seat driver...i love it. :D
Yea, not sure why they needed to add 4 ft to it, someone probably got a promotion for coming up with that. Guess I'm gonna have to find some space under there.
-
I would still contact them and ask them why they thought it would be a good idea to make it that long. And maybe even send them your picture. Companies don't do things just to do things. If you point out their error, it'll save them money. Not a ton, but every little bit counts. Like John used to say, GM didn't install parts they didn't think were necessary. If Chevrolet could save a penny per car by leaving something out, they would.

Yea, what the hell. I'll send them an email and see what's up.
Edit: Done, now we wait for the answer.
-
Their reply...
Hi Charles,
The length of the harness is determined by the GM blueprint so it has to do with the routing of the harness and its branches. I'm trying to find an assembly manual page to show the proper routing and I'll send a scan of it when I find it. The harness will route high in the dash and the branch will route down to the console. Hopefully assembly manual info will be coming later today.
I can't wait to see why it needs 53 inches.
-
This is what he's referring to.
Ed
-
Yea, even with that the length is still way excessive.
-
This is what he's referring to.
Ed
Yep, same pic. I got the follow up while I was out.
-
Well, if they're going by the original blueprints, then it has to be correct. I just don't remember my Lectric Limited harness being that long!
Ed
-
I installed my console clock not long ago which obviously required top end of console disassembly. Wiring looked like the picture Ed uploaded in the same location. Quite sure GM didn’t miss the mark by 5 feet.
-
Well it is what it is. I'll just rap it around the duct work twice...LOL
-
Yaint sendin it back are ya?
-
No, it's 3/4 installed and I am already 8 days behind my anticipated end date. Idiots who sell shit they don't have and just play you along. So pissed.
Oh, and this is for you David, I hope it helps.

Sooooooooo close but thanks for thinking of me. I have a convertible….looking for the needle in the stack of needles. Feel free to print this out. Found it on EBay, asked if convertible instructions are included…he said yes..I bought…no convertible…refund please…nope, and who’s stupid enough to put a defogger in a convertible?, contact EBay, see my emails, got my money back, go to KINKOS and make lots of copies, put on eBay for $12 less than said seller-with full pages exposed. Still on eBay, but feel free to print it out. Hell, I’ll email it you if you need it more.

Chuck, those pictures….what car are they from?
-
Sorry I could not help. I'll keep my eye out for ya.
It was in a 68 Firebird forum. That's all I know.
-
That duct will require both 👀.
-
I think I'd cut and splice it shorter - that's crazy.

I thought about it...lol
-
Can't be that hard - untwist the black wrapping, and go to the point where you want to splice. Use proper soldering techniques with shrink wrap, rewrap with the black plastic wrap again, yer done.
All that wire - oiiii!
