Title: Voltage Regulator Missing?
Post by: Chuck-68-Cam on July 04, 2022, 03:02:38 PM
68 Camaro, 350, th400

I can't seem to find the voltage regulator. There is a coolant bottle where it should be and it no where in that area. I can't even find the harness connector. Alternator only has output post. Any ideas? Can the system work without it? Would HEI conversion have anything to do with it?

Thanks for any assistance.

Is the horn relay still there?

Sounds like you have an aftermarket "one wire" alternator. Post a picture of it.

Yes, horn reply is still there.

Alternator is a Napa (I think) 213-4011SW So running without a regulator is a thing? Here are some pics.

Yep. That's a "one-wire" (self exciting) alternator. They don't use external regulators.

I'll be dammed. Never heard of that before. Was going nuts trying to find something somewhere. I know that without regulator you can get voltage spikes that are not good for wiring.

Thanks for the heads up.

The original style wiring had a plug that would be where that black rectangular plug is.

I thought original was a regulator on the rad support.?

You are correct, Chuck.  OE design has the VR next to the washer fluid bottle. and driver side headlamp.

They moved the regulator onto the alternator in the 70's, IIRC.
This is just one of those newer style alternators.

Thanks Indy, but does that apply to this one? The ones on that link all have spade connectors on the back. Or am I missing something.

That's because you have a 10SI alternator that's been, as I stated above, converted to a one wire, self exciting, internally regulated alternator. The wire connector on your alternator isn't required so it's been hidden by that black plastic cover (see below).
