Title: Re: Block stamp

I am trying to verify authenticity of my 69 Camaro Z11 Pace Car.  Can anyone explain where I can find the VIN number on the engine block?  I found a number on a flat plate behind the alternator...but no VIN?  See attached.

Check down on the back part of the block, drivers side by the oil filter area.

What is the assembly date of the engine and what is the build week of the car from the cowl tag?

A lot of Pacers came with the 388 casting numbered block for some reason, usually with 041 heads (occasionally with 186/300 horse heads). By the time the first Pace cars were built in the last week or so of February, Norwood had long since planted the VIN on the side of the block, in the flat rough cast area right above the oil filter as was mentioned. Not the easiest thing to spot, but usually there. Casting dates align normally, but the casting number is a strong clue as to originality (or the possibility of).

Just my opinion -

Regards,
Steve

That's not an original engine pad stamp, IMO.

The factory broach marks are certainly 'gone'.... but I suspect it's possible to 'lightly mill' the deck which would remove the broach marks, but still leave the 'deeper stamped' app code..?

Is the engine 'cast date' consistent with the stamped assembly date??  I assume he can't verify the VIN with the engine in the car (would be very unusual if he could)...
