I don't like them. Block numbers are stamped too high. Don't like the vin either. Circular decking marks.

Thanks for your input, I was a little worried that the 19N was deeper than the rest or the partial, also. Anyone else thoughts???

You can mask the pad during any decking operation and only deck UNDER the heads...   but this only works IF you want to preserve the original stamping, NOT if you want to eliminate the original and restamp to your nefarious fraudulent purposes!!

Don't know about all this other BS being talked about I was just looking for thought on these numbers. My customer bought this car which is real nice and the motor has some issues so he asked me to check it out and check the numbers out. I don't really see any of the original broach marks either?

Thanks

Is it possible the block was decked and the numbers restamped? I'm sort of in that boat: decked block, lost numbers. Even if I could "find" them I'm really hesitant to restamp because it would look like a forgery.

WTF dude..  I think you need to take it down a notch..  BTW TAKE OFF THE CAPS LOCKS  (http://ls1tech.com/forums/images/smilies3/secret2.gif)

Back to the original post.  The block is a restamp in my opinion but would like to see a photo from straight down onto the pad.  If the deck was squared then there would be less of the stampings visible..

The 'stamped numbers' only have importance in two situations today.  1)  Original Class Judging  and 2) If you Sell your car.  If you KNOW what the engine is/was and you don't plan to show/sell it, then leave it as is.   If you restamp it for judging purposes then let the 'judges' decide what they will .. :) .. and if you restamp it and sell it, then just admit to the buyer (potential buyer) what you did... and no harm done!

The 'problem' comes into play when people/crooks/cheats/liars/etc    Restamp a block for resale purposes and then claim that it's original.  Obviously they can't fool all of us, but they do fool some people ... and that is Fraud.

Mr GMparts.  I'm curious, how deep do you have to deck a block to totally remove the original factory stampings?   How much do you typically have to remove to 'square' a deck?

Now that's where you are wrong... at least a few people have original air in the tires when they bought the cars... one with 1000 miles and 12lbs to 15lbs of air in the tires.

For those of you that are new here the Mr Greg Long from Angola Indiana that we assume is MR GM Parts was convicted and sent to jail a few years ago for selling fake GM parts, restamped parts etc. The ads seem to be much more carefully worded now. I think the detective that was instrumental in convicting him was T Crooks at the Angola Police dept.

Yes, his 'story' now is that he obtained his parts via 'trade' and thus he 'believes' he has no responsibility for telling the truth - but he has no problems stating that those parts/stamps are *original*... (he seemingly doesn't understand the concept of 'truth');

This whole mess nowadays is why I still would rather drive and spend my time frequenting swap meets.  I would rarely consider buying something from ebay that had any substantial value unless they were close enough to drive and meet face to face.

Feel sorry for those that get taken like that with a bunch of knock off parts.  If ebay just disappeared it would be doing everyone a favor.

I agree that it is the worst feeling getting taken. I have had it happen at the swap meet, eBay (Greg Long, but got my money back), & craigslist. There is always that chance you take, when purchasing anything, hell,  I went to Olive Garden last week, and my "sirloin steak" tasted like some turkey pork meat concoction, (should have stuck with pasta).
My point is, I think you always have to keep an eye out for fraud, and if you suspect it be on top of it, and if possible help others out to avoid it.
I like eBay and Craigslist, and while it was/is fun to look forward to going to swap meets, it seemed all to common, that the guys who brought stuff to the swap meets to "sell" would over price it, and would then end up having to pack it all up and take it home. Seemed less guys were out there to actually sell their stuff, they would rather talk about how nice and "rare" the stuff they brought was, then part with it. Anymore it seemed like there was more Vendors at the swap meets, then guys bringing quality original parts.

Ebay and Craigslist is not for everyone, as you guys alluded to, you have to be able to read between the lines, and like anything else do your research, and be able to spot the original, from the made to look original. I just like the fact that (for me) eBay is similar to a 24/7 swap meet, and you can still find gems, and below market price items on there, car related or not.

I buy from ebay occasionally, I just don't bid.  Don't like that whole concept.  I'd rather someone just be upfront, tell me the price and we'll make a deal. I'm just a straight shooter and prefer to deal that way without all the monkey business.  I've Been on the market fishing around at cars, but I pass anything up I have to bid on.  If it has a "buy it now" or a "make offer" then I'm interested.  If I have to bid with some hidden reserve, they can keep it.   I guess I'm just old school, don't fancy computers much, like to deal face to face and touch/feel what I'm paying for.  Then I'm confident in what I'm buying, the seller has his cash in hand and I have my part, everyone is happy.
Yeah Bullitt, I'm just weird like that I guess  ;D

I would agree that the numbers after 19N appear to be stamped at a different time...not sure how this would be done?

Pretty sure these kinds of questions are going to go unanswered. When you factor in that a guy like Greg Long may be reading along, that would be enough for me to lock the topic. Please see the above link from Charley, or do your own search for Greg Long / court / angola , and have a good detailed read, about a guy who is poster child of fraud in the camaro hobby.

Yes, it's well known that big blocks were stamped without the head on.
Too bad you can't recognize a restamped VIN.....
