Title: No VIN numbers on block
Post by: 69only on December 21, 2015, 02:38:25 AM
Hi,
Recently found a 69 Z/28 in the local desert (SoCal) where it has been sitting for about 20 years. Have no concerns about originality despite being an LOS car, but I cannot see a VIN in either of the two standard locations. Stamp on pad is V10I1DZ, trim tag date 10C. I am pulling the motor to get a better look. The trans has the VIN stamped in two places, both on top of the main case, one in the usual location, the other along the very front edge. Any comments?

According to JM on page 21 of his book  "In the case of Los Angeles-built cars, VIN numbers have been found on the front engine pad built as late as April and some early production engines have been found with the VIN number stamped by the oil filter boss."
Yours is pretty early but if it is down by the oil filter boss they can be almost impossible to read in the car.
Yes, post up some pictures of what you have. Would enjoy seeing your new project.

I didn't pay attention to the LOS cars when I was reading that section but Jerry's book mentions the Norwood cars basically the exact opposite saying they stamped vins on the pad until about Jan 69 when they found it easier and made the switch to the oil filter area if I'm reading that right.  Odd that LA would be opposite?

I have an early 1969 Z28 built Van Nuys built 09D 1968.  The car has the born with drive train.  The to[p of my trans is double stamped like yours. The Engine vin number is stamped along the oil filter boss.

My '69 Z28 LOS built 11A with born with drive train has no VIN on pad. Like was said before, very hard to see stamp along oil boss. I'll have to check the top of the trans!

Welcome to the Forum Fathom RS, thanks for help!

Your car looks very cool in the small pic. Start a new thread, and post some pics of your Z and give us some history about it (please) ;D
