Title: Thompson Raceway Park OH raced 67 Camaro
Post by: 67dragcamaro on July 17, 2015, 08:43:12 PM
Hi all.

I´m trying to research info on a recent purchase, a 67 RS/SS.
It has a Thompson Raceway sticker on it´s side window and overall it is in pretty bad shape. To my (untrained) eye it´s clearly been raced and not just for fun.
Trim tag is quite impressive with multiple options, not a plain-jane.

I´d appreciate any info on this Camaro. Thompson Raceway Park has good web pages but no vintage pictures.

Thanks.

I found a small, golf pencil under my drivers seat with this places name on it and an earplug! Would be neat to see it on the track

Thompson Raceway Park has good web pages but no vintage pictures.

Here's a few from back in the day (May 2-3, 1969)...

Very cool old track, like a time capsule. Very well maintained facility. Lefts lane takes you a little left off the line if your not right in the  groove. Heard there used to be issues at the end of the track, dip or something. Fine when I ran it. Coolest part is the return lane is like driving through a park, then runs in front of the grandstands. Norwalk is just a hard act to follow with the direction Bill Jr. has went with it, hard going back to gravel pits, but doing Gasser Reunions at Thompson is a neat experience.

N/E Ohio is full of old war horse Camaros, still running strong.

Probably going to need a little more info on the car, like where purchased for one. When it was put out of service ?

Check YouTube for vintage drag racing: Thompson-42-Norwalk.

Not much additional info on the car, sorry to say.
Apparently color theme has been like it is now so hoping to find maybe a picture or even race results or something to ponder on results...

Trim tag reads
765-Z  F-2
2LG 3SL
4P 5Y
Multi-leaf 12bolt with 4.56

Maybe a liquid paint stripper, like sold at hardware stores, could take enough of the top layer of paint off of Fender/ door sides to see if any writing or clues to it's past.  Also, the Yenko site has some knowledgeable guys that have a lot of old racing pics and know a lot about different racing car's histories.

Any car like yours I like because it is obvious of some drag history and think it's neat just 'cause it is not messed with. Back when I bought my cars I shied away from the ones that were butchered up, looking for cars with OEM parts and not cut up. In reality, I probably passed on a COPO or Z or something not knowing what it was BITD just 'cause it looked like your car, meaning looked to have had been raced seriously. Today, I would love finding a car like yours as it is intriguing and I like period correct mods. It would be nice to find out the story on what happened, like when it was raced and why was it "put out to dry" until you got it.

Still looking for info.
There is some kind of fish scale paint scheme visible on driver side quarter.

Sorry, for a possible hijack here:
Those are some cool cars in the back round, I can see a 66 impala and a 68 Coronet possibly?
X2 with Bentley comments, this vintage racers are very cool. I would love to find a vintage trans am car.

Very cool piece of nostalgia. I would try wet sanding, rather than chemical stripping. You can slowly go through each layer. Take lots of pictures.
Good luck
