Title: AM Radio
Post by: jdv69z on September 26, 2014, 02:52:33 PM
I'd like to remove that after market Radio from my 69 Camaro and re install a more original looking AM unit. I have an AM radio from my 71 Chevelle that looks pretty much identical to the pics I've seen of the 69 unit. ID/Part no. is identical, except first character is "1" for 71, not "9" for 69. Looks like it would work? Does the radio have some kind of mounting bracket on the back side that I need as well? Seems like it would have to?

See your Assembly Manual, section U63, sheet A3, item #1, 2 and 3 for the bracket and attaching parts.

Only difference between a 71 and a 69 radio is that the radio dial lamp on the 71 is wired directly to the dash lamp circuit, so that the dial is lit (and can be dimmed) by the dash light switch and is only lit when the dash lights are on, while the 69's are wired off the 12V power supply and is lit when the radio is on, and not lit when the radio is off wheather the dash lights are on or not.  That and the different shape of the heat sink on the rear of the AM/FM radios, square in 71, angled in 69.  It will still fit.

DO use the bracket - otherwise it puts a lot of weight on the plastic dash bezel - might break it or the shaft recesses. Find a used one, or get a repro - a lot of them around.

You can use the 70-71 AM's, as long as the backlight screen/lettering is green and not blue. I think the power connector is a little different starting in '70, maybe later in '71/'72, but it's been awhile since I looked at 'em. Dimensionally they should be identical -

Regards,
Steve
