Title: Spare tire hold down bracket location ???
Post by: DAVEN1256 on November 11, 2013, 02:09:42 PM
Does anyone have any reference dimensions to properly locate the spare tire hold down bracket in the trunk?

Attached are a few photos from my '69 Z28.. original location.  I took these for you with a tape to show you as closely as I could to where it goes.
*(I can't tell  you that all models/yrs were the same because I don't know)..

69Z28-RS.......Thanks again for taking the time to take those pictures. I notice that your bracket is not in the same location as the one in the first picture I provided. That is not my car in that picture and I have no idea if that bracket is in the original location or not.

I wonder if someone could take the dimensions I am showing in this picture were dimension "A" is from the centerline of the bracket to the center of the curve where the trunk floor transitions from the flat part to the sloped part............and dimension "B" is from the centerline of the bracket to the center of the stamped ribs.

It would be interesting to see if the bracket is in the same place on most cars or if this is one of those "it's different on every car" situations.

Thanks......... Dave

Hi Dave,

It may be easier than you think to find the correct location. There should be dimples in the floor surrounding the location the jack hold down should be mounted. The posted picture you show looks to be correct for a hardtop though I can't see the dimples due to what looks like seam sealer but the proximity looks close enough if using the floor stamping as a reference.
Attached is a picture of my 67 4B LOS hardtop, which I think is the same for 68, and the jack hold down is mounted between dimples in the trunk floor. There are other dimples in the area off to the right side but this picture shows the ones that are used for a HT. I couldn't get closer because the car is stored on a lift and I was on the ladder.
  Hope this helps.

Mike

Mike, thank you for the picture.

When I visit the body shop where my car is at later today, I will check to see if the dimples are there in the reproduction trunk floor.

I don't think you will find dimples in the repro floor pan.  The spare hold down bracket is one thing that has to be removed and placed on the repro floor. Happens a lot.....

Wow, this sure generated a load of interest!
So, at this point, there is no compelling evidence of the bracket location in a Coupe differing from small/big block(?).

I can't see why there would be a difference. Only coupe vs. convert is where the differences are.
The tire pressure decal would be different between the SB and BB.

The other difference in mounting location, (besides coupe and convertible) is if the car has a space saver spare or not.

without some form of factual evidence, it's difficult for me to believe that Fisher welded the hold down bracket in a different position based on purchasers' choice of 'spare tire type'.....?   Do we have factual evidence to that ??

Gary if you look in the 69 AIM RPO N65 sheet A1 it certainly looks different to the wheel position in RPO 10 sheet A2.

My car came with a space saver spare.  As shown on the original Jacking Instructions, the space saver is mounted in a different position from the full spare.

Can you take some measurements of where the bracket is welded to the floor?  Like this.

Seems that everyone says that there is no difference between the spare mount in a BB car as opposed to a SB car.  Found this in the AIM today (UPC L35, sheet A15).  It appears to show that the spare is mounted similar to the convertible.  Can anyone with an original BB car confirm this is the case or is it the same as the SB.

Jerry.  The pic I posted above is from my fathers original L78 car.  I will measure the 67 since it was originally a sb car tomorrow unless someone else can get the measurement first.  I am 99.99% sure it is the same...

Also this and the other thread could be combined if you asked me..

Here is another thread with measurements of a 67 BB convertible hold down bracket if this helps. It's for a full size spare.
Note is is lower than a coupe and mounted on top of a rib in the trunk floor.

Looked at the AIM page again and compared it to the UPC 10, Sheet A2 and noticed that there is a difference....seems that the bolt has a different part number, there is an extra part called a retainer, and the instruction sheet has a different number.  I wonder?

There ARE differences in the hardware..  but I thought we were discussing the *location* of the bracket for the hold down...?   I really don't see any differences from comparing the AIM pages, except for the convertible versus coupe difference.  I think any other 'spare position' differences, whether it be regular tire or spacesaver, comes from the size differences in the tires (in case of the spacesaver) and from differing hardware, or hardware positions...

Sheet A15 is for the CONV ONLY (L35) Model 12467 as called out in the MOD block of the drawing.

Thanks Jim.....my copy of the AIM is very faint down in that area and I couldn't make out the numbers.  Makes perfect sense now.  Sure would like to have a good first generation copy of the AIM.

I thought you can download a copy? (.pdf) that is fairly good & searchable, you just can not copy & paste from it (protected?)

I have a hard copy purchased in the 80's from the vendors, WAS like gold back then, I just did not have the smarts to go to dealers & start buy'g up parts from the avail stock.

Not to Hi-Jack or be off topic, but that is funny Jim in your perfect hindsight revelation. I, too, purchased my AIM in the late 80's. I thumbed through it and thought, I am not sure what good or value this thing has? So, packed it away and dug it out 20 years later. It was like that old commercial, "Wow, I could of had a V8!?"  or a German proverb, "Vie are too soon oldt, und too late schmart."(sic). Shoulda,woulda,coulda...I am always seemingly an hour late and a dollar short .

Bentley quoted the old German proverb, "Vie are too soon oldt, und too late schmart."(sic).

that one is great, Bentley...  and I believe applies to most everyone.. :)    (german or not)...
