What is the correct hardware for the rear spoiler on 69 z28. Getting different answers an y.net pictures?
-
Scott, I'm unsure when the changeover happened, but the late '69 Z28's used a special flanged stud and nut with built in washer and rubber.. I think '68's used the acorn style, and probably early '69's? the unrestored blue/white car like yours was a May '69 car and had the flanged stud and washered nuts.. I can't recall what month your car was??
-
My all-original 02D Norwood '69Z has acorn nuts along the rear (outside the weatherstrip, no sealer required), and flanged nuts with integral sealer along the front; if you look closely, you can see black sealer tape through the un-used hole for the standard trunk lid emblem.
-
the later style on my 08C uses nuts instead of the acorn style on Kurts car. I also noticed that mine uses different studs. Unfortunately I suck at resizing my pictures. I think mine are the same as Gary's , so Gary can you post a picture of yours? I think your studs will look similar to mine
-
Bullitt,
Yes, I believe yours and mine are the same, and also the same as on all the late '69 Legends cars I observed at the nationals last week. The same nut type was also on the unrestored '69 Z28 (blue/white) - a May'69 car.
Attached are a few photos:
photo1) the rear-most nuts as originally installed for holding the spoiler.
photo2) the 7 original nuts from removing my spoiler for cleaning and repair (one of the longer forward-studs was broken and the nut was missing),
and
photo3) one of the longer studs from a fwd spoiler position with the flange and two differing thread types. What made the studs unusual was the existence of a 5/8" diameter 'flange' in the middle of it's length, with machine thread studs on one side of the flange, and a self threading type thread on the other side (for installing into the spoiler itself). Note: the rear-most studs were similar to the forward ones, although with shorter machine threads on the 'nut' side.

Thats exactly what I have on my car, thanks Gary your the wiz with resizing your photos. Now when I look at your original stud it doesn't have the taper and spacing that John Z stud does. So different studs and nuts for early cars? John could your studs and nuts have been over the counter replacements?
-
What is considered an early and what is considered late build? I have an 04D which I think falls in the maybe its this way and maybe its that way do to the build date? lol I have the acorn type on the front and shouldered washers on the back and lost points at legends.

hi Scott,
What did the judges say about your hardware? Can you photograph it as it is and provide the photos and what the judges told you? JohnZ's original 02D if I recall, has the acorn nuts on the four rear-lip studs for the rear spoiler, whereas the blue white unrestored Z (05B or 05C?) at the Frederick nationals had the nuts same as my and other later '69 cars I have seen and noted at the nationals. yours is in the middle of the data points I have, so it 'might' be either way? or it's also possible that the factory had some 'leeway' in what to use, and which was used was somewhat arbitrary? The rear spoiler was installed in the Fisher plant, and I'm unaware of any factual documents for that (such as we have in the factory assembly manual for what was *supposed* to be done in the assembly plants... Provide some photos of yours and give us the judges statements and points, and maybe we can all learn something?

John could your studs and nuts have been over the counter replacements?
Nope - it's never been touched since the day it was built; it was among the last of the '69 cars that got the "short" '68-style rear spoiler.
-
Sounds like you guys should do one of your famous time frame / parts info research charts specifically on rear spoiler hardware.....
If you do, allow me to add the details from my mostly unrestored 1969 Z. It's a 10A of '68 short spoiler NOR car with hardware just like Johns 02D car.

It might be interesting also to check on 'short' versus long spoilers at the same time... perhaps the earlier hardware was used with the short spoilers, and the changes made at the same time?...
Charley, do you have a photo of the 'end' of one of the longer (fwd) studs? see if it's like JohnZ's or like the later ones?
-
I will take photos this weekend and post. I have the longer spoiler on my car. Thanks for the help
-
The studs on my spoiler are the stepped down style just like Johns... Charlie

In the plant, that end treatment (small unthreaded tip on studs or bolts) was called a "dog-point".
-
so the million dollar question is what hardware belongs on an 04D car? Acorn style on the front and the shouldered ones on the back?
-
Well just judging based on the pics of the 2 short spoiler cars, (johnZ, hubleyman) have the acorn nuts and "dog point studs". The 2 later cars have the full spoiler, with the other style studs and nuts. So it seems like spoiler size determined what hardware you got possibly? I think we need other guys with original D80 cars to chime in so we have a better sample size.

on a different note, HUBLEYMAN what is with all the black residue on the underside of your deck lid? I have a similar film of black on the underside of mine , did your car have some kind of rust proofing done at one point?

I'm guessing that the inner portion of my trunk lid was undercoated early in the cars life (by factory, dealer or otherwise?) and at some point in time the spoiler and emblem were removed. That would explain why those areas do not have any undercoating on the spoiler mounting hardware instead of them being completely covered with the same goop. If you look at the inner structure from an angle, you can see more undercoating extending further inside of the trunk lid. Maybe some soundproofing or undercoating was part of the style trim group?
This car doesn't have any extra undercoating or rustproofing inside of the fenderwells or on the bottom floor pans, other than what the factory may have applied to all productions cars. Charlie

My 08C car has nuts instead of acorn nuts too.

hi Scott, I assume you are referring to the very back lip of the deck lid as the 'front'?? :)
Does your car have the short or full width spoiler? that *might* dictate which way it was built. How is it now?

that application might have been done by the owner, or the dealership, in addressing water leaks into the trunk? The holes for mounting the spoiler are a potential means for rain water to get into the trunk, even if the rubber weatherstrip is doing it's job, IF the rubber seal around the studs/nuts aren't doing their job. Note: water leaks into the trunk area can only be from the most forward of the spoiler mounting holes, since the rearmost ones are outside the trunk weatherstripping.
