General Discussion / Re: How long have you owned your Camaro?

I've posted my dad's car here before, but here are before and now pics. He's the original owner, I'm the proud caretaker.

I don't understand how it could be an 01B car (Jan '69 build) and require/have a Dec '68 registration???

Yes, good question.

The last few new vehicles I've bought from a dealership that needed new plates came with 'older' tabs on them. My last car was bought in November, but had Sept tabs on it. I think dealerships buy tabs in bulk.

Just wish we could find the POP and other paperwork. Probably could tell the registration story better.

Sorry, a little clarification. This is the 69 registration, not the Dec 68 one. But since the renewal is each year, the car would have originally had it sometime in Dec 68.

Still haven't found our POP and other reciepts (which my dad swears are in their house somewhere), but did find this. Our car is an 01B, he said he didn't take delivery until early Feb. But he swears he ordered it in late Oct and paid for it in Dec (actually my grandpa paid for it because my dad was 15 at the time). But then the dealership 'screwed up' on the order (dad thinks they were selling above MSRP at the time, sold his car when it came in and reordered another).

Anyway, found this registration reciept. Kind of cool.

Interesting that the song in the commercial is in English.

That 67 is a very nice touch. Amazing how the 'art' of the camera angles transforms and makes images much more powerful.

I had Holley refinish and rebuild mine, turned out great. I can't remember the turn around time though.

General Discussion / Re: Age Groups of Our Hobby
« on: December 13, 2013, 01:29:42 AM »
I'm 32, so pretty close to the 20-30 age group :) I've told my story before, I think there's been a few threads over the years similar to this one. Fortunately for me, my dad has always been a car guy. The 'trick' was taking me to car shows and occasionally the track. In my teens/20's, I was more interested in sports (what my friends were into), but still enjoyed cars. I had zero technical ability back then. It wasn't until a few years ago I rediscovered the old Camaro that had lingered around the garage during my childhood. My dad and I restored it, learned a tremendous amount along the way (insert CRG plug here!). Wouldn't trade it for the world. Now I refuse to buy a new vehicle as a daily driver, I'm finding enjoyment in seeing how long I can keep my old Explorer running (by doing my own service on it). My friends laugh at my wheels, but I take pride in keeping it running. Anyone car buy a new, reliable car. Takes someone skilled to keep an old one going down the road.

Common thread seems to be getting kids engaged at a young age, whether it be car shows, taking them for a ride, etc. Maybe next time you take your kid to a show, make them bring a few friends :)

Don't rip too much on the Fast & Furious movies, they've starred some pretty sweet old iron.

Price point is expected to be GREATER than the current ZL1 model, which starts around $53k I think.

Thankfully, the Blue Ray Metallic/Concord Metallic looks very close to Dusk Blue :)

General Discussion / Re: 1969 DZ BLOCK OR NOT...
« on: September 03, 2013, 02:44:05 AM »
The original engine for my car is long gone (I tracked it until 1977 though!), it blew up a year after my dad bought the car. So when we restored it, we built a non numbers 302 and I've had a blast with it.  I've been looking for a date code correct engine/block, but the prices are nuts. Instead, I've been doing what janobyte suggests, build a stout 302.

I feel a CE engine should be more valuable than a date code correct. When these engines blew up, they were usually replaced with CE ones, not date code correct DZ's. I know I'm in the minority with this thought, but feel it tracks the cars history much closer to what likely happened with these engines.

Hi Rob, FWIW, I put poly bushings in my car during the resto and now wish I would have used rubber. I use my car for cruising and it's really stiff (and squeaky).

I also installed stainless lines and it was a cinch, no leaks (yet).

Hope this helps.

Festival makes a good point, they used the 'corporate' engine in the Z for years. I guess I was hoping to see a 302 to rival the lastest Boss 302.

After a few days of thinking about the new Z the more I'm liking it. And a Blue Ray Metallic might sit well next to my other car :)
