Could be paint fade or the exposure of the photo.  Seeing the engine photo above it appears to be a deep groove pulley on the alt.  Do you know what alt stamp it has and how is compares to the build date of the car?  Single fuel line or does it have a return line?

Looks like a photo quality issue.  Appears black with a glare to me.  Email me a full size photo that hasn't been reduced and I can repost it.

Can you share more details about the car? Trim tag, vin, does it still retain its original drivetrain?

Almost all of those pictures are at LOS. Have people seen 68's or 69's with gas tank blackout?

I've never seen it on a NOR car, btw.

Yes on 68 LOS cars (I'll need to confirm on 69's), I too have not seen on NOR cars.

I do like the "Built By The Number 1 Team"

I'm sure I've posted it before but this is the NOR sample that was on the green 68.

Great addition of photos too btw.

Side question:

Was the green Penske ZL1 #44?

69-69 car was #17
72-72 car was #25

19N68 (maybe 9) 0963

You can make out the N.  The spacing would be off if there was a 7 at the end.   Just my opinion so take it for what its worth which isn't much.

Care to share the pad photo?  If you dont want to make it public could you email it to me?

Thanks, Darrell

Might ask Don Lightfoot.  He doesn't have a 68 listed but has 69.  If he has enough info he might be able to make one for you.  He does great work and I have bought from him in the past.  Good experience.

The only data points I have for Oct 10 are in Norwood cars.

Ditto Bill.

Not a fan of the partial but MIGHT be ok but that L is not one I have seen before.  Assembly date compares well of a couple I have on file.  What is the casting date on the block?

Looks correct to me.  I might have a few extra sockets from when I redone the harness on my red car.  But I'll have to look.

A stretch to call it a Day 2 build.

Certainly possible William.  For the record, I have seen it both on NOR and LOS cars.

The fact the D90 is followed after the D88 would lead me to believe that the car was "ordered" with the D88 but due to not being fully released into production is why the D90 was the default option for the car.

I have never seen original examples where the splined stubs for the wipers and the associated mounting screws for those had stripe color on them so I agree it was mounted after the cowl was painted. The long horizontal part of the linkage is the one that occasionally has some stripe color paint on it where you can see it through the cowl vent.  Whether that is due to "internal repair" or some other reason, I don't know.  For guys who have their car judged, I don't want that little splash of stripe color to be considered wrong because it did legitimately happen on occasion.

Jon, I am in 100% agreement with your statement.
