Title: Original calipers, '69 Z
Post by: VI009DZ on January 09, 2007, 02:03:54 PM
My '69 Z and I have only been seeing each other for about 3 months now, but I finally got her to take her bottom off last night  ;D I pulled the front wheels to inspect the brakes.  When hitting the brakes, the car initially makes a lurch to the right, then straightens out if you quickly get to the brakes again.  Both calipers are cast with "DELCO MORAINE", and have some other stuff cast into them.  Were the calipers originally Delco Moraine like the booster, or are they replacement parts?  Are there casting dates or anything that would help tell their age?  Sorry, but I don't have a picture handy.   Thanks for the information....

Probably a partially collapsed LH front hose. OE calipers were Delco, single-piston.

I had the same problem on my Z-11.  Bad hose.

I've had both bad hoses and stuck calipers. Make sure you get good hoses. Arghhh, you have no idea how much agravation a bad quality new hose causes.... (the cheap new hose can make it appear that there's air in the system).

a friend of mine with a daytona yellow x77 car had the same problem. he rebuilt the master cylinder. not it. rebiult the metering valve. not it. rebuilt the right brake caliper. not it. turned out it was the brake hose. remember these cars are almost forty years old!

Hello VI009DZ,

I had the same question that you asked, and posted it before with no feedback yet.  The pics are the Delco Moraine calipers off my 69Z.  I can not confirm if they are original.  I am assuming they are not due to the what appears to be Julian date codes "274” and "254". Given my Z is a 05A car; the calipers in the pic are too late in the year.

Can any one help decode these?

Thanks,

Dave,

Those are casting codes. Your date codes are stamped on a machined surface somewhere. I'd have to look at mine to tell you exactly where, but I'm sure if you look you will see them. I can look at mine when I get home Thursday if you don't find it.
