Title: 1969 Camaro Temp Sending Unit - U17 Wire Terminal
Post by: Edgemontvillage on July 26, 2021, 09:17:29 PM
I'm in the process of installing a new wiring harness kit from American Auto Wire (AAW) on my 1969 Camaro RS Z/28 project. Overall the engine harness from AAW is quite accurate however I have run into a few deviations from original that need correction including the terminal for the engine temperature sending unit with U17 console gauge option. On the 69 Z with console gauges the terminal was a bare brass friction fit slip-on type with no (plastic) connector however the AAW kit includes a ring style terminal that would require a nut to secure the terminal to the sending unit. AAW doesn't supply the correct terminal (although they did supply a console gauge harness) so I've been trying to locate one and the common 3.5mm bullet terminal is too small to fit over the sender post. Anyone have a good source for these connectors?

Take a look at ZIP Vette: Item #:  ES-510
I also would like to find a source for the one you have pictured.

Hi Jim and thanks, the brass terminal in my photo is a 3.5mm bullet style I picked up on Amazon however the bullet end is too small to fit over the temp sender threaded post. Zip Corvette Item ES-510 is the same repair harness available at Camaro parts vendors and has the clip-on connector rather than the bullet style terminal I'm looking for.

I will order a ZIP ES-510 and report back: 1968-1971 ,,,,,,Includes original type "pin" connector with terminal, correct color wire and asphalt insulation.

Hum thinking out loud here >> Terminals & Nomenclature.

Spade Style = Flat Male Metal Packard Series 56 or 59.
Pin Style = "T" shaped cross section button head mushroom
Stud Style = Threaded or unthreaded Round stock

I messed up my Orig harness and put a larger diameter covering on mine, I found a vendor whom sold the brass pin-terminal & white round plastic housing connector & now I can't seem to locate that seller again a year later.

I will post results.

I think I had checked with the "Packard series" terminals supplier Texas Industrial Electric Co. and they did not have the pin style available either.  I also performed a salient characteristic search of terminals via Digi-Key and came up empty.  I want the correct terminal, Funny I see cars all the time with a female packard series or Thomas and Betts  female terminal with the spade style forced onto the stud,,,,,

Am I missing something here? The assm manual calls for a nut & lock washer. In 1981, that's what my car had/has. Still has the OE sender.....Joe

Joe, I may have this wrong. I'm drawing on what I thought was the original sending unit terminal that was on my former 69 Z survivor. Here is the graphic that AAW has on its site showing the differing types of sending units. I believe the PN for the sending unit with factory gauges (U17) is 1513462 which shows the same threaded sender and calls for a ring terminal and nut fastener.

Thanks for the info and AIM reference (Joe). Seems my former survivor had the wrong sending unit terminal.

any chance an early build 69 December or Jan could have the pin connector 01513130 or 06400759.
just wondering if gm wanted to use up these before going with the screw on nut type.
your thoughts on this,
thanks

I am 99% sure those two sending units are for idiot lights.

You are saying that the sending unit has a varying output based upon the temperature?

Hmmm
My early Z28 non gauge car had the pin.
I restored an early (dec) 30k mile big block with gauges and it had the ring terminal.
The correct pin type connector looks really odd - the plastic looks like a blade terminal end the brass terminal pushes on from the side.

Looks really nice.

What did you use on your exhaust manifolds?

Thanks James. To keep the thread on topic I sent you a PM with the details.
