Most of us know there were; 37,773 RS and 34,932 SS Camaros built in 1969. Unfortunately, there is no record of how many acquired both the RS & the SS options.
If you are able to offer a comment in support of your vote please do so.
If you do not know or are unable to make a honest guesstimate, please indicate this by choosing option 12.
Thanks for participating

Speaking completely from an unknownable stand point, it may be possible to consider the percentage of RS for all Camaros and then apply that to the known number of SSs, or visa versa. I base this on a common view in the Mopar community, there were no records kept for specific options or colors, ie fresh air hoods or plum crazy. If 10% of the cars had hoods and 10% were plum crazy and there were 10,000 R/Ts built then 100 were plun crazy R/Ts with hoods.
10,000 X 10% X 10% = 100
Right wrong or otherwise it is a commonly held view.

There were 243,085 '69 Camaros built. Out of these, approx. 16% were RS & 15% were SS.
Using your formula: 243,085(16%)(15%) gives us 5,834
Out of the 243,085 (thanks Tom) 3,675 were Pacecars.
Something tells me we're still off by a substantial number. Any ideas?

WOW, didn't I say just over 5000 in your original thread?!? ;D ;D ;D
Problem is I wasn't working from the same formula. My "logic" worked down more from the popularity and cost of combining the two options back in the day. Not very scientific, I'm afraid... ::)
-
Phillip,
I certainly hope you're right! If you take the 3,675 number for the Pacecars this only leaves 2159 for none PC RS/SS's. Do you think this is possible? Again, certainly hope so!!! ;D
BTW...SCIENTIFIC ENOUGH! 8)
Thanks for your help M346...

Once again the SWAG method works!

What about the Z10 coups? :o

Add another 400 to 500

Bet there are more in existance today than were ever built by Chevrolet!

I was told on another site there's a book called Chevrolet Camaro 1967-1972 by William Burt that states 37,773 RS's were made in 1969. I don't know if its true are not.
-
Hi John,
The number 37,773 shows up in all reliable references I have checked. Did not know about William Burts book. Must be an excellent source. The price for this book is...$12.69(used) to $590.00(new). Not sure if this is due to the popularity of the book or the author? At any rate, as a respected author you would have to believe his numbers are correct.
Thanks

There's a lot of stretch on the mathematical formula IMO. It assumes that people on average pick one or the other and that they overlap only by the percentages of both. But if everyone (an extreme example) who ponied up the bucks for the SS, decided to drop a few more bucks for the RS then the number moves wildly to the positive....
So the extreme would be that 15% were both SS/RS and only 1% RS. That skews the number of RS/SS to over 36000. Subtract the 4000 or so Z10 and Z11 and you have a car that is not so rare!
The real number of non-Pace Car SS/RS has to be somewhere between 32000 and 3200. That's as close a REAL number as the math allows.
Just throwin in a wrench.....

Appreciate your input Gary...You are exactly correct...a lot of stretch & assumptions..., unfortunately there isn't much more to go on...or is there? These number are based solely on the SWAG method and nothing more...we had to begin somewhere. However, comments such as yours was exactly what I was hoping for when I began this thread. It appears you have real concerns with respect to the low numbers some have proposed.
In addition, even though your estimates place the RS/SS totals between 3,200 & 32,000, you still placed your vote (if I am correct) at 25 to 30K...IMO this total appears just as extreme as the previous figure of 6 to 7K...please explain how you arrived at this number? Wouldn't you agree, given this extreme gap of 3,200 & 32,000, a median range of 10 to 15k might be more appropriate?
-
OOPS.... nope, I placed my vote at 12-14K units which was the closest mid point I felt comfortable with...
anyway, are there not Canadian records available? Not sure if they can be accessed, but if so then we could extrapolate out the total production from the smaller number of units in a proportional ratio?
-
Apologies Gary...the OOPS is all mine...
Excellent idea about Canadian records. Anyone have suggestions on who to contact? If available, please include contact information.
Thanks!
