George,  Thanks..
via Amazon, new ones are a little less than $100, with almost new used ones about half of that..  I'm considering ordering one of them.   Can you post a couple of good example photos that you've digitized from a slide?  :)

Decoding/Numbers / Re: rear axel code chart

Nope; a BE axle has a different posi unit in addition to the HD ring & pinion.

Does the BE axle include the HD posi unit that was used in the 'Service Duty' disk brake differentials?   That one had more plates, and higher spring pressures than the standard 12 bold posi unit.  I didn't know there was a third one, OR that the HD unit was put into passenger car rears.  IS the BE unit the only one having such a Posi unit?  If you or anyone have more information on the whys/wherefores of this differential, I think it would be very interesting reading for us all.

General Discussion / Re: cowl tags
« on: November 25, 2013, 03:49:05 PM »
check ebay. have him put what ever he wants on the tag.... just disclose it when or if he sells it. if the car is undocumented then it really doesn't matter what tag he puts on there imo.

And actually it doesn't matter that it even HAVE a cowl tag....  it's still a car and it is what it is.   When the original items are gone, the 'originality' is gone except for what we can verify with our eyes and knowledge.   Do you worry about putting the mfg tag back in your sweat shirts when you 'tear it out' because it aggravates your neck?  :)

I've got stacks ands tacks of Bell/Howell and Kodak slides trays... but not easy to get them into digital form.
Gary, Last winter I bought a slide to digital converter via USB that worked good & was easy to use. You are welcome to borrow it if you have some free time over the holidays. It has been fun to share the old pictures with family & friends. George

Hi George,
I designed/developed high resolution digitizers for all sorts of media and formats for 15-20 yrs in my professional engineering life, but the ones I was involved with were very very expensive and high end.  I actually have a couple of those expensive ones, but to digitize film on them, the slide has to be removed from the holder and thus isn't very efficient.  Kodak and others were developing 'fast slide digitizers' at one time, but I've never used one of them.  Can you tell me what you bought?  maybe a link with a description?  who made it?" what model? etc...  If it's affordable, I'd rather buy one than borrow yours..  :)   but thanks for the offer.. :)

That's my thought as well, although I've never actually did it myself.  I'm under the impression that the soda is immersed in water, and that you're 'blasting with a soda/water solution' which abrades away paint, but I would not want to use water to 'blast away rust'..??  Just my only partially informed thought....

OK, My late father purchased this Jimmy new in 1954 (55 1st series) He drove it daily for 30 years and put over 500,000 mile on it. (still retains the original speedo which was still working at last drive)

It had the motor R&R twice the tranny replaced and rebuilt once and the rear end replaced once. Always retained the 6 volt electrical system and has never had a body panel replaces or repainted.

Then the GMC became a victim of poor storage :(

Is this a SURVIVOR ? just curious.

I think that is one you need to restore, or at least make functional, preserve it, and drive it..  in the name of your father..  :)

Thats pretty exciting meeting with the original owner. The original owners wife and family live in northern Michigan, it was about 3 to 4 hours from where I was in northern Indiana.   I would to get up there and see them. Having the 4 kids, just didn't get a free weekend to get up there. I still keep in contact with the son. It is hard for to believe his dad owned the car all the way up until 2007, and they never took a picture of it over the years. He was a fanatic about the car, but no pics?
Your pics are a priceless treasure, post up what you get from him, and it might be cool to get a picture of him with the car if you have the chance in the future.
How far is he from you?

It's only been with the advent of 'digital cameras' and big disks on our computers, that taking photos is as easy as snapping your fingers.    I had many cool cars, but very little photos..  instamatics didn't take that great of a photo, nor did polaroids (Wanna buy some old cameras?) .  :)     Of the photos we did take, the prints are generally faded, yellowed, etc after 30 to 40 yrs, and it's not easy to convert the slides.  I've got stacks ands tacks of Bell/Howell and Kodak slides trays... but not easy to get them into digital form.

1969 - Orphans / Re: 9N624309 302 shortblock
« on: November 23, 2013, 02:46:42 AM »
I asked the seller to take better photographs of the VIN stamping, and also of the stamped deck.  He did, but still not good enough.    On his second look, he indicated the VIN might be 91N684xxx... which would put it in line with the casting/stamping dates...

The deck appeared to have been decked, and the stamp was still very clear (deep), that raised an issue in my mind, but those things are difficult to tell from a photograph.   Maybe the seller misread a digit in the VIN (since it is apparently on the side of the block on the cast block surface..?
