Decoding/Numbers / Re: Late March D80?
« on: September 17, 2011, 11:10:58 PM »
Actually, Dave, I think you have a typo there.  Isn't the trim tag top line "ST69 12437 NOR 04138BDY" ?

I am guessing this is your car:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp3984Q2em1423Q2el2649QQitemZ260851006947QQsspagenameZSTRKQ3aMEWAXQ3aIT

Further, I am guessing, based on your response, that you had no idea it was a fake trim tag on the car when you purchase it.
Actually, under Oklahoma law it is technically a "counterfeit" tag... others may wish to call it reproduction, or whatever, but if it doesn't reflect the exact same info as what was on the original tag, what is it reproducing?  ... guess that is a whole other topic.
You are not the first guy to be taken advantage of.  I can only imagine the sick feeling in your stomach right now.
Sad thing is, there may be nothing you could do about it.  But... then again, there may be.

Send me a PM if you wish.

Thanks for all the info, and a special thanks to the member here who found some and sent me a private pm.

I found my originals complete with nuts and washers and even the original mounting bushings.

Thanks a million.  I am sure I have the originals somewhere, and now know what to look for.

Restoration / rad support to frame nuts and bolts.
« on: September 06, 2011, 06:19:57 PM »
Well, I am finally doing a test fit of all panels to make sure everything lines up before final painting.  I did a good job of indexing and marking most of my bolts for storage.  Unfortunately, I haven't (yet) found the nuts and bolts I need for the radiator support to the front of the subframe.  Can someone give me the exact size of the originals (or even better, anyone have some usable originals I can buy)?

Thanks for any help.

Restoration / Re: 1969 SS350 muncie 4 speed tunnel hole template
« on: August 23, 2011, 04:47:48 PM »
Here are a few photos that may also help. Not sure how accurate you want to be but gives an idea of how the torch cut tunnel looked. Also note the placement of the ground near the back of the opening. These are from my old Van Nuys Z that was 100% original.

These are from my other 69Z . Car had been raced and the tunnel hacked but the dimensions from the center of the groove back should be spot on

Just to be clear, the ground strap is for the guages, is that correct?   So.... on a non console, non guage car, there would be no ground strap?   I am asking, not telling?
The last pic posted by rat427 does not appear to have a hole for the ground strap, but does have the threaded nut for the console, so I am guessing it is a console car, but without guages.  Again, asking.

Originality / Re: DZ harmonic balancer VS LT1 harmonic balancer
« on: April 30, 2010, 03:21:13 AM »
I realize this is a very old thread, but there is a difference betweent the 7708 and the 7712.  GM didn't use different id numbers just to confuse us.  If there is a different number, there is usually a difference, even if they are interchangeable.

They both start out from the same casting, as noted above.  Timing marks are in the same place, and yes, they would interchange.

The machining is a little different.  The 7708 has a lip machined into the back side from the outside in, making most of the outer ring about 1/16 inch thinner.  The machining starts just outside the elastomer (sp?).  It would be very easy to make a 7708 out of a 7712 with a lathe.

Can post a pic of them side by side if anyone wants to see the difference.

Originality / LT1 balancer date
« on: April 28, 2010, 10:38:25 PM »
I have an LT1 balancer dated J 0 F.  I am guessing:

 J = 10th day of the month

0 = 1970

F = June

Anyone know FOR SURE if that is the correct format?

Thanks in advance.

Decoding/Numbers / Date id for eaton posi unit EDB 30174
« on: April 22, 2010, 01:09:23 AM »
Posted same thing over at TC.

Not sure how to figure the casting date on an eaton posi unit. I have three "4 series" carrieers with casting number EDB 30174.

I believe the three digit number on the opposite side of the casting number is the day of the year. I know one of mine has "138" cast into it, which I assume is the 138th day of the year (or is it the 38th day of 1971??). BTW, the same carrier has a "174" cast into the other side, which must be some kind of identifier, but it doesn't have the little "screw heads" on either side like the 138.

Is there anything cast into the case to indicate what year? If so, where.

Also, I know the normal posi case and the COPO posi case are the same casting number, with different machining done to accomodate different side and spider gears. Anyone know if the "heavy duty" over the counter unit was also the same casting number? It was sold only over the counter, and was also marketed by Moroso as the "Brute Strength" posi carrier, made to accept GM ring and pinion.

Thanks in advance.

If that tag is original it is either a Z or an L78 car.

John Berry's old car, 671208 I believe is an 08A car with a July 2 assembled motor.  It is the white car on page 92 of Jerry's book.

General Discussion / Re: Fan Clutch
« on: March 06, 2010, 12:17:07 AM »
This is the clutch in question.  It is an Eaton, but looks similar to the one in the article labeled as a Delco, except the Delco has somethiing stamped into the metal, where the Eaton is only ink stamped.

Seems strange he can get clear pics of both casting dates, but horrible pics of both engine pads.  And both pads look brand new.
