Title: Michigan Int. Speedway: 1969 Camaro RS/SS 396 Conv Pace Car SCCA Trans Am 1969
Post by: SMKZ28 on April 01, 2020, 06:56:06 PM
A white 1969 Camaro RS/SS 396 convertible was used as the pace car for the Wolverine Trans Am race held at the newly built Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn, Michigan on Sunday, May 11, 1969.  Parnelli Jones won the rain soaked event in his 1969 Mustang Boss 302.  Mark Donohue originally celebrated the victory but after a scoring error was noted, Parnelli was declared the winner after everyone had left the race track.

A dark colored 1969 Camaro with a 307 V-8 and rally wheels appeared in a photo taken in the paddock.  It has the words "Inspection Cruiser" written on the side.

I've seen this picture a hundred times but I just noticed that the Jerry Titus Firebird Trans Am race car behind the Camaro has the original 1969 front end and hood on it, not the hybrid 1968 front end and hood that he eventually raced in this event and the rest of the year.

The picture was taken by Ron Lathrop and many more of the event can be found in this thread: http://www.camaros.org/forum/index.php?topic=8328.0

The 1969 Camaro RS/SS 396 convertible pace car appears briefly in front of the Trans Am cars on the pace lap in home movie footage taken on the road coarse section of the track.  See it at 11:53 here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l8gDGZ11qgw

Thanks to CRG member Mike K./Swede70 for pointing this footage out in the Trans Am section of CRG.
