Title: Console Cut Out Dimensions for A/M Carpet Install
Post by: clm69z28 on September 08, 2018, 04:25:20 AM
I searched and didn't find any info on the front carpet cutout dimensions for the console. I am replacing an a/m carpet kit so it won't be any help. As they say- "measure twice and cut once"- so I definitely need some dimensions!  Thanks in advance.

I also wonder why the carpet has to be cut out for the console other than the bracket and shifter? I would think it would add a bit more noise/heat insulation , but I'm sure there was a reason for Chevy to do it that way.
Also, I have seen pics of original cars with the floor Insulation material surrounding the trans tunnel, but my car doesn't seem to indicate it ever had any and the repo vendors don't sell it. Can anybody shed some light on that?

Anybody? I thought this would have been a no brainer on this forum,  but I searched through a lot of the forums and didn't find it so maybe it doesn't exist.

There was a thread on installing a console in a non console car. Hawk X66 had some good pictures of his carpet. Can't find it at the moment....Joe

I can't say how a '69 carpet was cut but on my 67 LOS w/auto and console, the carpet was cut just enough to allow the console bracket through and the shifter w/boot.
When I recently restored my 67 convertible w/console. I cut the rug the same way as the 67 LOS but only after laying it out and locking down the edges under the door sill plates.

I did manage to find this thread, and if you look at post number 10 you'll see the carpet is cut out for the console and is actually in two pieces held together with velcro. I was hoping not to have to try to guess at the console cut out and then cut my brand new piece of carpet in two without something to go on more than a picture, but I just might have to. Thanks to all for the help.

Don't know if it'll help, but I have this plan for when I get around to fitting my new carpet:
1. Fit front section, only slitting around seat track mounts and trimming edges around kick panels and sill plates when sure it's centered and fitting well.
2. Mark the center of the trans tunnel at the front and rear of the front section of carpet.
3. Remove from car and cut into left and right halves at those marks, to be joined later by Velcro, which I'll stitch to the cut edges (have to refine that detail, as carpet won't have an overlap).
4. Refit both halves of carpet.
5. Fit console bracket, trimming carpet locally round it and the shifter cutout.
6. Test fit the console, and only trim edges of carpet over tunnel as required to get console to sit low and level.

Hi Tim, that seems to be the only option without any dimensions to go on.  I only wonder if the carpet needs to be cut in two as this might have only been necessary for assembly line efficency? That adds a whole 'nother level of complexity that at this point seems not worth the hassle for a car that won't be judged.

It may not need to be cut in two, but I figured doing that *might* allow the front carpet to be removed in the future without having to pull out the console again. Plus it would probably make the carpet installation/trimming job easier - I'll most likely be doing it by myself.

Well, I have sort of taken all this information and come up with a way of installing the carpet around the console, but I don't know if the carpet goes on top of or below the firewall insulation pad. It seems to fit better if it is over the insulation pad, but that could be because it possibly  needs to be trimmed?

And which one of the Camaro manuals is the interior covered? I have looked through the AIM and the Fisher Body service manuals and I can't find anything on the interior in either one.

On my 67 survivor the carpet edge is tucked under the firewall pad.
Before cutting the carpet, I highly recommend to have the edges locked down under the door sill plates.

Following your advice on the sill plates as we speak. Thanks for the quick response Mike.

Looking at the 67 AIM, UPC 1 Sheet C5 Front Carpets, it states to "tuck under dash mat".  Doesn't mention anything about cutting the carpet, so I wonder if they came pre-punched for a floor shifter or console?  The process is also briefly mentioned in JohnZ's article:

In my 67 the carpet has a crude cut and folded backwards to clear the console bracket and shifter opening.  My guess is they used the same rug for column shift or console cars.

Anyone know which manual the interior is covered in?

Some of the interior was installed by Fisher Body and the rest by Chevrolet, so if you can't find it in the AIM, try the Fisher Body Manual. If you're specifically interested in the front carpet details, Pete's post above references the AIM.

^ for the '69 AIM, front carpets are UPC1/C3.

Does anyone know which of the manuals covers the Interiors? I've looked through the AIM and the Fisher Body service manual, but it's  not in either one.

I have never seen an interior manual.
