General Discussion / Re: color correct underside
« on: February 25, 2010, 11:12:50 PM »
Thanks Tom, I have done a bunch of searches but you clarified a few things.  It sounds like the Z11 and Z10 had a lot of over spray under them because the rockers were painted white instead of black like SS's were.  That would explain why some of the cars I have been looking at have the white underside.  I have to rely on you guys because I bought a car that was media blasted 17 years ago and has sat since, never assembled.  So its like a huge jig saw puzzle and I have figure out where everything goes and what finish it should be.  It makes it much easier having my 68 to drive while I do a long term restoration on this one.

I have read about over spray under the car but I see some restored with the body color underneath and there is a Z10 selling tonight on Ebay that claims 26,000 original miles and it has all white under the car.  The paint is really old and looks original so I doubt it has be changed since new.  Just making sure I put the car back to the way it came.  thanks

I nearly died after leaving the surf ballroom in 1983 after a concert a couple of days before christmas.  Eighty below windchill factor and blizzard conditions.  Would have thought the jacked up 67 camaro RS/SS with fifties sticking out the rear wheel wells would have done me in but just slowly drove it in a ditch with my head out the window.  They closed the road and found us out of gas the next afternoon.  My toes still get cold even living in sunny Arizona.  No more snow for me.  The Buddy Holley curse passed me by!

I agree that it would be nice to have a correct list of finishes.  It seems that Jerrys book and the list it is compared to when you search this site have conflicting info.  One might say natural metal and the other says semi gloss black, or one says the  jack is painted grey verses silver/gold cadium finish for example.  Also does powder coating the subframe and front suspension in the 30% gloss look correct or do you need to paint as original?  I am doing my Z10 and have seen them with white underside and most with black.  Wish there was a universally accepted color and sheen chart and maybe suggestions as to what products others have used to achieve the correct look.  This is a great site to learn from but everyone seems to push jerrys book, are all of his finishes accepted as factory correct?  Thanks for all your help.

Decoding/Numbers / Re: engine build date vs. car build date

The motor was rebuilt in 1994 and was still in the plastic wrapper when I bought the car.  They decked the motor so I have no idea when it was assembled.  I found the vin by the oil filter.  I tried some muratic acid on the pad and it looks like it could be raised but I did not want to mess it up, they had no idea what they were working on back then, they even stamped their company initials and rebuild date on the heads and block.  I know they fake numbers on the pad, anyone do it on the rough area by the oil filter?  I am sure this is the original motor, just curious.  Anyone in the phoenix area that knows how to raise numbers are welcome to look this over.

my Z10 has a 05A build date and the block is L28 8 which I assume is December 28th 1968 which seems weird.  Intake and heads are march if I remember right.  Why would they make the block that far ahead of assembly?  I found the vin by the oil filter, tough to read but it matches.

Do you have any idea what these would have been on from the factory?  And I was not sure how to read the markings as to the date of manufacture.  At first I thought they were pontiac wheels, I have seen a couple of pics of SS cars with them but they are hard to find, special order I guess?  So the Z10 would have come with the regular rally wheels?  Thanks for your help.  Kurt

My Z10 has SS wheels and not Rally wheels, is that correct?  I read they stopped making them around the first of 69, my car is a 05A build.  The stamp by the valve stem reads:

M1 and has a 9 centered under them,  3, stem hole, 15,  YA  Not sure if they are right but the research on this great site did not have anything like the M1 with the 9 under it.  Also did they start stamping the vin by the oil filter?  Thanks for your help, I have found so much info on here its crazy.  Kurt
