Title: alternator date vs build date
Post by: Terry69RSZ28 on March 31, 2015, 11:57:34 PM
Would a 9C24 alternator be acceptable and correct for a 03E build date?

Terry is it a Norwood or LA car? If Norwood, as a comparison, Darrell's barn find dusk blue X77 Z (LINK (http://www.camaros.org/forum/index.php?topic=12511.0) to thread) is an 03B car and the alt is dated 9B19. Block and trans are both March 14.
I guess it's possible for NOR, personal opinion (only) is that's a bit too close for LA, but Kurt and the other keepers of the database will know how other cars components built around that time are dated.
PS I'm assuming from your user ID that this is an 837 alt for a 69 Z/28!

Yes, it is a Norwood built 69RSZ28 with the motor (0327 assembly), transmission(P9C14A), and rearend (0327 assembly) all born with certified by Jerry MacNeish. I am looking at a 1100837 alternator to put on with a 9C24 date code.

I think it's too close; I'd try to find one a bit earlier.   3E doesn't provide your *build date*, it simply states that was the estimated week of contruction (some turn out to be a bit earlier and some a bit later).  To be sure of your car's build date, pay the NCRS their $50 and get the facts.  Short of that, use your VIN number to estimate more closely than the build week when your car was actually built.

Terry, for comparison, my 1100837 alternator is a 9D3 for an 05A Z28 built May 07.  I would think four to six weeks before build date would be in the ballpark.

I may have an opportunity to buy a 9C7 alternator. Is this more acceptable?

9C7 is on the mark in my opinion. I have a 9D3 for a 04C.

This past thread has some dates. http://www.camaros.org/forum/index.php?PHPSESSID=cjovfnsrrmiritd3qohgdlbov2&topic=11931.0
I believe the amperage rating option has a lot to do with date ranges between the car build and the alternator date stamp. The basic amperage is likely to be consumed faster than an optional one that can sit on a shelf for a while before being consumed.

Terry, based on the vin info you provided me, your car was most likely built on either Friday (4th of April), or Monday (7th of April).   Based on that I think either of those alternators you are considering would be viable.   I don't think there's ANY way to determine for a given day of production which alternator dates were used... they grabbed one with the right PN/color and installed it.. :)

Terry,
A Z built 1 day before yours has a 9C24 alt.

Kurt out of interest, does that particular car with the 9C24 alt also have other engine bolt-ons dated close to the car's build date too, or is there a spread of dates? Is it also a NOR car?
