Mild Modifications / Harmonic balancer - SS350/300HP
« on: April 25, 2018, 12:28:08 AM »
I’m in the process of replacing my harmonic balancer because I thought it spun. This is a SS350/300 car.  I bought a new 8 inch “stock” unit from Heartbeat City. After pulling the old one, I noticed it was a 6 3/4 balancer and appears to have been originally painted blue. The timing marks are not aligned. The old small balancer has the timing mark offset from the keyway which is wrong for my car. I had to find TDC and put a line on the balancer.  The new larger balancer has the timing mark aligned with the keyway which is right for my car. The timing cover on the car is for a 6 3/4 balancer.

I thought all 350/300 were equipped with an 8 inch balancer? Will it be benificial to change the timing cover and use the 8 inch balancer? Safe to assume it won’t hurt anything?

Mild Modifications / Engine mod - thoughts?
« on: April 24, 2018, 10:06:08 AM »
My 69 SS has the original 350 numbers-matching block. After looking up the other numbers, I know that the intake manifold and the heads are not period correct. Furthermore, the carb is not correct either. It appears like most of those bits were from 1972 to 1977 donors.

I’d like to rebuild the motor and get a few more ponies but I still want that orange motor with cast iron exhaust manifolds.  At this point, I can’t pull the block, save and buy a crate motor. I’m not flush with unlimited garage space. I’d like to keep the block and maybe the quadrajet carb. I thought about picking up a set of double hump heads with the 2.02 intake valves and putting those on with a DZ aluminum intake and the Holley carb. Not trying to build a Frankenstein but also not trying to put back to original. Any good thought?

Perfect! Thanks John.

If someone could kindly send a pic of how the small return line from the fuel filter connects to the return line down by the fuel pump, that would be very helpful. I’m guessing it’s a rubber hose and red clamps?

The pic in the original post wasn't of my car but an example I thought was correct.  It looks like someone replaced the original fuel pump with a 3-legged rascal  :o.  I would like to convert it back to as original as possible.  Here is what the fuel pump look like and the three lines from my actual car.  Is this more effort than what it's worth?

Originality / 69 SB Fuel Line Routing
« on: April 17, 2018, 11:35:02 AM »
I couldn't find much detail on the fuel line routing for my 350/300 SB.  My routing does not seem correct but "kinda" matches the AIM.  Most 350's I see have a primary line running from the carb toward the center of the motor to a fuel filter.  That line passed behind the water pump down to the fuel pump.  I attached a couple pics.  I can't tell where the smaller fuel line goes and it's purpose.  I have generic fuel filter installed (former owner) and it seems to be starving for fuel.  I just want to eliminate that as a problem.  Here is my confusion:

- Where does the smaller line on the fuel filter go?
- Did all 350's have the fuel filter and fuel line running behind the water pump?
- Is the AIM diagram a different version but still correct?

Mild Modifications / Adding a dash clock to a ‘69
« on: April 12, 2018, 09:33:23 AM »
Nothing turned up in a search but I was wondering if anyone has added a center dash clock to a 69?  This car does not have a clock nor was it born with one.  Will the plastic dash surround need replaced or does the center Camaro “plug” come out?

Originality / Floor pan color
« on: April 08, 2018, 11:43:40 PM »
What was the color of the undercarriage (floor pans and tunnel)? My 69 has primer gray floor pans and the tunnel is sprayed black. I’m trying to understand what was done from the factory.

Mild Modifications / Re: Adding a non-gauge console?
« on: April 04, 2018, 10:39:57 AM »
Still formulating my install plan.  The non-gauge console wiring harness generally is supplied with the repro consoles.  However, where is the wiring harness on the car side?  That is, I presume that a non-console car does not have the #1 harness shown in the AIM?  :-\  Below is a clip from the AIM.  Does anyone have pictures or routing of the harness?

I haven't ripped-up the carpet to look, but is it safe to assume that there are dimples in the locations for the front console bracket even for non-console cars?

No, they were not a split nut. They're called a "rivnut."

My factory one:

You wouldn't happen to have a picture of the other side to show the crimp?  :)

I'm reviewing the "plan" to install a non-gauge console.  I want to make sure it is: 1) done correctly per the AIM and 2) it's reasonably reversible.  I see four holes I would need to drill.  The front two look reasonable but the back two require a "special nut" - 3792287.  Was that nut a split nut like the picture below?  The diagrams also included below show the special nut and part number.

Just shopping around and these seem to be the biggest (perhaps there are others).  This is relative to prices, in-stock, fast shipping, quality, customer service.

Originality / Laminate or not?

Would it be okay to laminate the original documentation such as the original window sticker to keep it from falling apart or will that ruin the value?

Originality / Re: Searching for the "story"
« on: March 24, 2018, 12:29:12 AM »
bheston, I did the same thing years ago when I found my 69's original owner. I sent him a short, hand written letter, apologizing in advance if it were intrusive. I got a call from him the day after I mailed it. I got the "story" and ended up eventually driving it 100 miles to his house to let him see and drive it again. It was a great day. I hope the original owner is excited to hear from you and you discover a great story.

Unless you plan to drive in the rain or snow, or enjoy leaving dual stripes on the road outside your house, probably the only disadvantage to a non-posi at this point is if you drive onto the grass at car shows.

Hi John, that’s a great story 8). I hope my story is similar. Even if the gentleman does not reply, I hope seeing the pictures causes a rush of good memories for him.
