Decoding/Numbers / Re: Z28 VIN tag for sale
« on: January 17, 2016, 10:14:19 PM »
Correct me if I'm wrong.  The way I see it, is that this seller dug this cars grave.  It is dead!  We know the numbers, and now have record of them.  If this car is built, it's dead before it's born again.  124379L505413; LOS125673; 10D, TR 727, 72 72.

If the rally green Z would have been exposed before it was built, would it have brought 100k plus?  Would it have sold at all?

Thoughts?

Gary,

The only hard evidence that I see is on the Chassis BC.  There ARE several broadcast codes that reflect Z/28.

Block 155 is a (G) that represents 302 Z/28
Block 159 is a yes for posi axle
Block 161 is an R = Rally Sport
Block 196 is CV = Z/28 fan clutch
Block 198 is FP = Chambered ??
Block 213 is DV = 456 DV deep groove
Block 217 is CG = 668 CG deep groove
Block 269 = ?H = possible UH Z28 radiator
etc., etc.

There is nothing that I see that ties the car to the Chassis sheet except the Hugger Orange and especially the P code in Block 147, which has shown to be Ivory/Blk. 727 standard interior!!!  Luck?, Nah.  Turn his ass in, somebody!

X33RS,

If you could try stores like Tractor Supply (TSC) or equivalent for nylon bushings or bronze bushings for your linkage slop, they have had a good selection in the past.  Also, if you have any industrial supply places, try them for polyurethane round stock or bronze with your correct o.d., drill and ream your i.d., cut to length and your set for a tight shift!  Polyurethane or nylon would be similar to the throttle arm bushings.

Originality / Re: YH Wheel Date
« on: January 11, 2016, 10:27:06 PM »
Steve, There are several threads talking about that era of YH wheels.  (I searched March YH).  It seems there were NO march YH rims produced, and that the only two batches produced suitable were Jan. 26-29 and Feb. 26-28.  I think I would consider if the build date and VIN put the car early or late 04C.  If it were toward the first of 04C, I would think it would be a better chance of the car receiving Jan. rims.  If there were time elapsed and toward the end, it would stand a better chance for Feb. YH rims.  Jan. wheels would probably have been gone from the pile!  I personally don't think there was a big window for a range, normally pretty close.

I have never seen or heard of an 05A with anything else than a 4-18 or 4-21 YH.  Other build dates are different in their own right according to that pile of wheels in the bin.

My 2C,
Bryan

Here's another avenue of approach.  If anyone has there own family photo's taken at that National event you may have attended in 1967 - 72 or so, post them.  You never know how rare those photo's may be!

CNorton,

I missed your question at first, "just how many did you have in mind".  Well, I realized there were thousands, but how many are left in tact, with history and original photo's, (original photo's and now photo's).  There were those that were extremely popular and are the ones we see most in the magazines.  The ones that I would like to see are the ones that were not all over the magazines and the ones you are not going to ever see unless you were THERE at the time, originally, or shortly after.  I'm sure if this forum gets filled up, they can knock a hole in the wall and start expanding.  Let's see 'em.

Good Deal, Interest!  Now lets sweet talk the CRG into a category beside Trans Am Camaro's to get this started!

I have one sensible suggestion though, for a first generation camaro to be eligible for this category, the car itself had to be ORIGINALLY campaigned in 1967 thru 1969 and into the early seventies.  If it retired and was brought back later, that's fine.  I know there were many camaro's that started drag racing in the eighties and nineties, they were not originally campaigned!

For those of you that have them, lets see 'em.  Original Photo's too.  Just my 2cents.

Thanks,
Bryan

That would not be any different than having a Tuxedo Black (10) car with a Midnight Green vinyl top (S) and white stripes or a Olympic Gold (65) car with a Dark Brown vinyl top (F) with black stripes.  Same thing, three colors.

Continued from reply #7, here are some other percentages and production figures.

In 1969, the two tone paint was estimated at 5,909 units and a total production of 2.4% at a cost of $31.60 per unit.

The total production of two tone paint at 2.4% can be compared to Tuxedo Black at 2.0%, Azure Turquoise at 2.0%, Burnished Brown at 2.5%, and Burgundy at 2.0% for total production.

I would think that a Z/28 with two tone paint would be less popular and therefore would be less produced than these four colors of comparable percentages.  I would also think that a Z/28 with two tone paint would be put in a rarity category.

We had hoped that an example would have appeared out of archives or a collection, complete with photo and trim tag info!

Decoding/Numbers / Re: 1969 speedo drive gear for 3.73's
« on: January 02, 2016, 04:52:35 AM »
Bryon, that was a very useful article.  It cleared up compatibility issues with the two diameters.  Thanks!  Also, are most owners changing the plastic gear out with the earlier steel gear, as the article suggested?

Steve,  Thanks, that was exactly the information I needed.

Thanks,

Decoding/Numbers / 1969 speedo drive gear for 3.73's
« on: January 01, 2016, 09:45:18 AM »
The P&A chart for speedometer drive gears for 3.73 with E70-15 tires is part#3924097 and driven gear is 3860346.

The black 23 tooth driven gear 3860346 was relatively easy to get NOS.  My trouble is the drive gear.  My GM parts man tried to find the 8 tooth drive gear and came up with 3708145, which turned out to be the earlier steel gear without the spring clip.

Is the correct plastic drive gear for 3.73's part# 3924097, and is it Blue?  Is it 8 or 9 teeth?

If this 3924097 is correct, is there a replacement GM part number for the gear and clip?

I also found an 8 tooth drive gear, orange in color with a GM part#12338033.  I had no way to cross reference this part.

Please help!  Which is the correct mate to 3860346?  What color and number of teeth?

Thanks,
Bryan

Here is a list of the SIX two tone paint combinations for 1969.

53 - 50  Glacier Blue / Dover White
55 - 50  Azure Turquoise / Dover White
53 - 51  Glacier Blue / Dusk Blue
51 - 53  Dusk Blue / Glacier Blue
65 - 50  Olympic Gold / Dover White
61 - 63  Burnished Brown / Champagne

The top color appeared as a vinyl top from a distance, and was in the same configuration as a vinyl top and used the same trim as a vinyl top.

If any other two tone color combination besides the six listed above, appears in existence, and has a dual paint code to back it up, it would need to be reported here to CRG.

Could a -- special paint be used to fabricate another two tone combination?

Pacecar,

Is there any possibility that you could get a photo of the trim tag, for the paint code from this Z/28?  This car could be a special paint car, possibly a -- -- PNT trim tag.  There were six two tone color combinations listed in 1969, red was not listed.  BUT, anything is possible!

General Discussion / Category for 1st Gen. Drag Raced Camaros??
« on: December 25, 2015, 09:34:58 PM »
What would be the chances of a new category in "model specific discussions" with the title of DRAG RACED CAMAROS, period 1st gens raced in the NHRA, AHRA, etc.  I refer to the historic Strickler, Jenkins, Wenzel, Beeler, Harrell, Gibb, etc.  How many 67, 68, 69 Z/28's and COPO's, etc. were dealer or individually campaigned for drag racing that are not known by all?  How many?  Who were they?  Are they ALL known?  Dealer Advertisements?, etc.

I just thought it would be very nice to have a category similar to the Trans AM Camaros for drag raced camaros!  If the spot was made for it, could it be an ongoing project?

Thanks,
Bryan

Thanks JohnZ, I have only seen 8-10 two tone cars of any kind, several were big block SS cars.  I didn't see any reason why a Z/28 couldn't have been produced with the scheme.  Maybe one will appear one day!

Thanks,
Bryan
