This car is no stranger to CRG, but I believe it deserves it's own thread in this section. Enjoy.
-
Thanks Bryon. I will add vintage photos and as time allows Ill continue with photos I have taken and continually take of the preservation.

This whole preservation approach is right on with me. I like to see the progress Darrell is making with this car. It has so much meaning, not only as a great specimen to acquire, but more so, a legacy to the great previous owner, his dad.
-
Owner added spoilers , they aren't on the early photos....
-
Awesome photos Darrell :)
I see four different sets of wheels (including rallys) - all very cool.
-
Thanks guys and yes there were a few things my father added over the years.. ;)
-
More and the video of when he and the car were on Motor Trends Musclecar Archives.

Yeah, like that goofy looking, red headed kid! ;D
Sorry Darrell, I couldn't resist. ;)
Seriously though, beautiful car! You're lucky your dad kept it all those years.
Paul

Yeah - amazing this car is un-restored & original! Very nice.

Ouch.. Lol no that was funny..
Now to the interior shots.. Ill try to keep from doing before and after photos of the preservation and just stick to the finished product.

Bryon, no argument from any of us that this car deserves it's own thread.. :) It's a grand car and has a great history, documented by Darrell and his dad over many years.
Darrell: The labels on your seatbelts seemed to have gotten 'whiter/cleaner'.. did you do something to clean them? I took photos of mine today to document the dates and notices the labels are dirty (belts never been cleaned).

Nope I havent done a thing to them.. Thats what happens when they spend all their lives in the shadows of the crevasse between the seats and console..

You've been busy -
I thought the phone would have run out of film by this time - lol.
Proud you're preserving the old horse - a lot better than the other alternative to say the least.

LOL! Great photo Darrell, you can tell your dad was proud of both you and the car! :)
What are the two bolts in the center of the trunk floor for?
Paul
-
That is the trailer hitch that bolts to the bumper and then has a bar that goes under the gas tank and bolts to the floor of the trunk. I still have the hitch too..

Thanks. I'm actually been through a camera & 2 phones now.. Just had to get a new iPhone 6s the other day.. The old ones memory was completely full.. 😁

Just to give everyone an idea of what I was working with before I started this preservation process..(http://www.lateral-g.net/forums/images/smilies/faint.gif)
-
I surely hope you realize how lucky you are!
-
Most people do not realize how well the car can actually look without being restored...
I did a refurb on an original paint 1922 Oldsmobile SS V8 with aluminum engine block a year or so ago. (First aluminum V8 made.
I have an original paint 1918 twin 6 packard coming in a few months...
I am getting ready to do an original paint 1936 FORD he wanted to paint the car... I have convinced him to refurbish rather than restore.
Entirely too many cars were restored... cars which should have been preserved, now all of their details are lost to time and lack of knowledge.
-
I totally agree with James;
Darrell's car fits perfectly into the category "TOO NICE TO RESTORE"... :)
-
I used to only like Chevrolets, now anything unrestored I love to work with, it doesn't matter what make or model, as long as it is old and never been restored, preferably with original paint.
-
I surely hope you realize how lucky you are!
I fully realize and know exactly how lucky I am.. ;)
James you are correct and am glad I am able to get ideas from your experiences.. 8)
-
Wow that looks Great! That's a lot of work, but it really looks unbelievable. Would you happen to have a picture of where the metal brake line attaches to the rubber flex hose in the rear? ( from outer rocker and the bend to the brake hose bracket) I bought new line kits for my car ( 68 Z) and the fit is terrible, not sure where I have to bend them? I also had the brake and fuel line clips plated and powder coated ( by JM a while ago), not sure which ones go where?? I know Chick has them in his post but not sure, the AIM doesn't look correct either?? Just a little confusing, Most likely just me
-
See if these help.
-
That's perfect. I have a lot of bending to do Thank You!
-
I wanted to add this here. I had previously tried using a rust remover that I thought could do the job and replace the more expensive Evaporust.. Well that wasnt the case.. So I broke down and got a 5 gallon bucket of Evaporust and went to work. I knew going in that it would more than likely remove the paint markings and I KNOW!!! I said I wasnt going to repaint anything but because the rust remover took the paint markings off I felt it was important to reapply them because I had photos of it before..
Here are the before and after. I had to knock the shine off the markings and I think I am close but its not 100% exactly like it was but it is what it is and it was my decision so I have to live with it..
-
Darrel, do you use Gibbs? It will protect bare metal and actually stay wet to the touch for a long time.
-
No I used Cosmoline aerosol Rust Veto to protect the bare metal. What is Gibbs? Its not ringing a bell.
-
Darrell the drive shaft "touch up" looks good to me. I may have done the same.
I will have to tackle this on my 69 Z one day. Did you totally submerge the drive shaft in the evaporust? for how long?
-
Gibbs is the very best penetrating oil/water displace/starting fluid I have ever used, google it. It can even be painted over, so it can't have sillycone in it.
-
Original smog pump, pump brackets & manifolds. Everything was derusted and protected with Rust Veto.
Exhaust manifolds along with the portion of the head pipes that was cut off when headers were installed.

Pretty sure the hose is dated 11027 11th month 2nd day 1967
-
There are clamps dated 4/67 & 1/68 so I wouldnt be surprised by that date.
-
The rubber GAS line on the 12C X66 conv from a couple of years ago had 10308 on it. Tenth month 30th day 1968 is what I figured.
-
BTW I'm sure you noticed but I used your trick on the hoses.. ;)
-
9 months ago I started this mini preservation project and yesterday the car saw the light of day for the first time since.. Granted it is far from finished but I have to call it complete for now until I get a few other projects finished. So with that I will say take care and thanks for reading and watching. If anyone needs to reach me they can email me at cook_dw@hotmail.com Later, Darrell

Crazy nice job Darryl! Looks outstanding!

A quality job as usual, from a quality guy.
Any plans for the 68 Z? is 2017 the year you turn wrenches on that baby?
-
Very nice, car and back story is amazing.

Thanks guys. As for the plans I have no plans for the Z at this time.. Too many other things need to happen first. Itll be there when I am ready.
-
Rear brakes were rebuilt over the weekend and noticed a couple markings. After derusting the parts hadnt noticed it before but you can see that the adjuster plate is hardened on the adjuster side.
-
Drivers side
-
Also looks like the passenger side adjuster is gold dichromate or cad and the driver side is a blue plating.
-
nice details in the brakes Darrell!
-
Thanks. I need to get a couple shots of the brakes installed after derusting etc. BTW Evaporust in a crockpot is the cats meow.. I have the original wheel cylinders in boxes ready to be sent off for rebuilding as I was unable to remove the bleeders even with the left handed drill bits. Plus they have some pitting in the bores..
-
Drivers side
-
Passenger side. Also finished up the entire brake system tonight with bleeding of the system. Previously I had rebuilt the metering valve with the rebuild kit from MCR. First attempt fluid was pouring out of the back of the valve.. I thought great.. Pulled it off tore it apart looked at the orientation of the seal thinking I'd screwed that up.. Nope put it back on and still blowing fluid out the back.. Got to reading the MCR rebuild article online and noticed it said make sure the pocket that the seal sits in is extremely clean. Sooo, back off and torn down and got out the pick and it had a small little piece of rust down in the crevice and threw it back together and back on the car and bingo.. No more leaking and a very firm pedal..
-
Great work, Darrell!
-
Thanks Len.
-
Darrell,
Did the drums show any signs of the rear two letter prefix code sticker on the outside?
The paint looks great. My 67's LOS paint is so dry that the micro-cracking is very obvious and some areas it's coming off.
Mike
-
No stickers were present. Dad actually had painted them white not long after getting the car. So who knows if they were there then or not.. Yeah once it starts cracks its down hill from there.. Just keep letting the paint soak in Mequiars #7 polish which is about the best thing for it.
-
Darrell we'd love to see your car attend MCACN. It is a real stunner. You've done an excellent job documenting and preserving the car. ;)
-
Steve, thank you for the kind words and the invite.. Unfortunately, this dumb ole redneck would get lost up there in the city and besides its probably better that I stay down in the minors as Im not ready to mix it up with the heavy hitters of the majors.
-
Hey Darrell, what did that run you to have the cylinders rebuilt?
-
I didnt have them rebuilt.. I put the originals up and just got some over the counter replacements for the time being.
-
Oh I thought you had sent them out. Just curious who you through for the replacements. It seems wether I go through O'Reilly, AutoZone, or Napa, it is all foreign made crap.
-
I got them at OReilly's. I didnt want to wait and I wanted to drive the car. I will send them off to someone at some point.. Im not in a rush. Cars not going anywhere. ;)
-
I am so glad you got this car and have documented it through the sites. 68 L78's are scarce and unmolested unrestored ones are practically non existent.
-
Thanks James.. I am very lucky to have the father that I did.
-
10 years ago today my father was needed to bang gears in heaven.. There isnt a day that goes by that I do not have a thought of or about him. I miss ya pop!!
-
Hard to believe it's been 10 years to the day. We won't forget him -

Steve

After about 6 months of hibernation I decided to get ole green out to stretch its legs. Yeah I know another boring idling video.

If THAT is boring, why am I so mesmerized, entertained, jubilant , and just plain excited to experience “Dad’s” old car ?
-
Thanks.
-
I just got a chance to go through your thread. Very nice...Joe
-
Thanks. Here are a couple still shots from when I took the video this past Saturday.
-
Had a nice addition to the car today. An original USA-1 plate with the cardboard backing. Huge thanks goes out to Kasey, Chris and Nuge. Great friends.
-
Picked up a set of Cragar GT’s a few months back and a year or so ago I snagged some MT Indy Profile redlines. This morning I mounted them up and took it for a short drive over to my favorite photo background spot. Good to get her out as it’s been around 7 months. I’m pretty happy with the look.

I like the "new" look👍
How's the red 68 coming?
-
Looks period correct, but definitely different than the Cragar mags. Hard to go wrong with a great car like that. Glad you got to take it out. Are those bias ply?
(X2 on the red car status)
-
I just saw your thread, you are very fortunate to have such a beautiful car and in Rally Green even better. On page three reply #40 what is that number and what is that a picture of? Thanks Paul
-
Darrell, I LOVE the look of your car with the new wheels and tires...

Thanks. That is the stamped number for either the body tub or the floor. Can't remember exactly which.

Thanks guys. I am really diggin' the new look.
As for the Red Z. Well its been sllllllllllllloooooooooooooooww. I took in another small project for a buddy/customer. I did make a few purchases and some horsetrading over the last year or so. Got a pair of 15x4 Keystone Kustomags (not to be confused with Keystone Klassics) and a little intake with 2 carbs.
-
Some reason photo disappeared. Adding it back.
-
Ran across a vintage photo of the ‘68 that I haven’t seen before. Photo’d are my parents and my older brother and sister. Around the fall of ‘68.

Looks like you and your dad have the same taste. same tires, similar style wheel as previous pic. cool.
-
Close. Cragar GT’s were bought because it was a good deal. Still on the lookout for a good set of Kustomags in 14x6”.
-
I may know where there are some 14" keystones.. My wife bought a set for a car she had as a kid that migrated to father in laws 65 GTO many years ago & I think they are still around somewhere. Now as to the condition?? :-\ let me do some looking.
-
FYI Kustomags are different than Keystone Klassics.

I've noticed in the first original picture's, that there were not any wheel opening mldg's. as the pictures went, they were added. Do you think, wheel opening trim was an "option"? I also noticed that there wasn't an antenna. did it have a radio, I've seen on my convertible (upon replacing the quarters no hole/ and a plug in the right front cowl panel, where a radio antenna would be...I'm just wondering?
-
The latest 'vintage' pic also shows it was not built with Style Trim-no belt moldings.
-
The car was not ordered with style trim. You can see this in the very first post in the thread. It also was not ordered with a spoiler but was again added in the early ‘80’s as was the trim. Wheel well trim and revel trim were a part of the style trim option (Z21 in 68) (vinyl top cars got the gutter trim standard). Rear antenna was an option for non spoiler cars but was not standard. This car was ordered with U63, U73 & U80.
-
Thanks for the info. Really nice car!
-
Thank you
-
As the owner of a non style trim ‘68 L78, I considered adding it, but decided I really liked the cleanliness of the ‘baseline’ trim. Great car Darrell.

Haven’t posted anything in this thread in a while frankly cause I haven’t had the green car out much over the last year but here was a video I did sometime in 2022. Cold startup after sitting a few days. Hope you enjoy hearing an old solid lifter warm up.
Hopefully the link works.

Fantastic car. If only my 68 SS had survived unmolested as well as yours. Mine was horribly "customized" in the 70's & early 80's before I got it to the point that not much original was left intact. I did the best I could as a 19-year old kid in 1987 trying to reverse the carnage and fix the L.A. street miles damage.
Did the grill get replaced in your car early on or was the SS emblem always upside down? It looks that way in the early pics as best as I can tell with the low resolution. It certainly is upside down in the newer pics you have posted.
-
First, thanks. Second, the grill was removed back in the early 80's when the timing chain failed and my father had to pull the camshaft and ultimately the heads as well. (bent all 8 exhaust valves). Was the grill removal necessary? I don't recall but apparently he did and it was reinstalled with screws and clips at the headlight assembly areas. Also the engine has been out of the car before.
Short (hopefully) story. In '71 when the warranty was up on the car dad was ready to upsize the engine. He ordered a brochure from Motion with all the engines and other options that Motion had available at the time (which I still have). If I ever think of it when I have time I'll scan in the '71 Motion brochure info so everyone can see it as I don't recall ever seeing this one posted anywhere but I'm sure its out there somewhere.. But I digress, now this was when my parents still lived in Ohio where they bought the car new. He had bought a '66 L34 Chevelle from Earl Evans Chevrolet (which was traded in on the '68) and he knew Dale Evans (son of Earl) was campaigning a '69 COPO Camaro that was called "Steppin' Wolf". Dale sold my father the 427 from Steppin' Wolf and later after a rebuild installed it into his '68. He later sold the 427 and he always commented that that L72 never ran as well as the original L78. I can't say for sure as it was before my time. When talking to my mother about this she said she could remember driving around to the back of the dealership and them loading the engine into the truck and seeing that "race car" as she called it.
But to answer your question. Grill was removed but the emblem has never been touched outside of cleaning... Anyways, as Paul Harvey would say; "And that's the rest of the story.."
-
While I am at it, I will add that I just scored a pair of front shocks for the car (thanks to camarodude67 over on sYc). The originals were replaced long ago and were not kept. The rears however were pulled and kept. Rears are dated 45 68 and these fronts are 33 68 so I feel they will match well.
Here is the original Delco Pleasur-Lift Shocks info when he installed HD shocks just a few months after purchase in July of 68.
-
Next is a shot of the rear dates and then the newly acquired fronts.
-
Fronts - 3192826
Rears - 3192851

Nice pics of Steppinwolf…😃 I sent those to Dale, I have the originals on file here!
Steve

I borrowed them from you iirc.. but wasn’t sure.

Did you get the one in True Day 2 fashion , before it was lettered? I can re-post if not…
I really dig this car & your 68…

Last of the info. The only thing that is missing from the package were the Motion decals which my father had on the qtr glasses of the green car for many years and eventually removed them in the early 80's.

Got ole green out last sunday and putted around the neighborhood and put'er back under cover. Pretty original but there are a few things I still need to do which include replacing the '80's repo valve covers with original correct ones (which I have) and also smog was removed and headers added. I think this is the 3rd or 4th set and I have another set I will eventually attempt to install since I do not know the brand or application but they look like they might fit.. fingers crossed. Also power steering & disc brake option was added by the original owner (my father). Originally mandatory power drums.

Really cool to see Orig Paper backed foil decals-stickers.
Funny how times Change in 1983 FIRST thing I would DO is Scrape that off and put new ones on.
In 1981 NONE of the "Survivor- Patania" cars were looked at fondly like I do now. Sure enjoy them & appreciate it

Hard to believe its been 17 years since my father passed and 4 years for my mother (on the 23rd). He was a true Camaro enthusiast and my mother loved him unconditionally.
First photo is I believe Tri-Cities (TN) Camaro Show
Second was '95 (maybe '96?) Camaro Nationals in Atlanta, GA, Pretty sure Rick George (Rick's Camaro) was the main sponsor but my memory is not the best.
Third is at the local Wilson Bank and Trust show in Oct. '95.
