Decoding/Numbers / Mystery font on a stamp pad
« on: December 03, 2019, 05:07:38 AM »
Aside from the visible issues with the broach marks- I have never seen this font used for a VIN stamping- ever. Not a Camaro- a 67 Impala 427, LA built. Please let me know if this shouldn't be posted here and I'll remove it, but I thought I'd ask. Just when you think you've seen everything, you learn something new... Anyone ever seen this font before? Thanks!

Anyone care to opine this tag? Looks ok to me but never hurts to have some more eyes on it... Thanks!

Decoding/Numbers / 1969 Z/28 rear end date code
« on: November 05, 2019, 08:10:57 PM »
Hello,

Help me out with the numbers on a Z28 I'm looking at. No BS or POP. Norwood car. Data tag is a 5A, (first week May). Rear axle stamping is BU0513, (3.73 posi) which would theoretically be a week or more past the body build date. Diff casting date is under layers of crud I did not scrape away, so the whole thing could be a year off, I think BU's first cam in 68. Anyone seen a diff dated a week or so after body build date. It seems plausible to me, but not if its never been seen before. It's not supremely important since I already know the gearbox is not original, but more curiosity than anything. Thanks!

Decoding/Numbers / Casting Date?
« on: February 12, 2019, 03:22:22 PM »
Checking this 350 for casting date, the only thing on the back side of the block on either side is the casting code and this big K12, but I've never seen casting date numbers this big or in this format before, and there does not appear to be a year. Does the K12 denote a McKinnon block, or a 11/12 foundry date. I suspect McKinnon but wanted to see if anyone actually knows. I've been all over this block and can't find any other casing date anywhere. Did any McKinnon blocks make their way to Flint to assembly in 1970 for Z28 LT1's or did they all go to Tonawanda? Thanks in advance.

Originality / Re: 1970 steering column question

Thanks- nothing looked modified or amiss under the dash, it was only the 76-81 parts diagram that got my curiosity peaked.

Originality / 1970 steering column question
« on: February 02, 2019, 05:17:52 PM »
Hi everyone- quick question, mostly for future reference for me going forward as I'm passing on the car in question- 1970 Z28. Car is currently a 4 speed. I have a question about the steering column- there is an arm coming out of the column just past the firewall in the engine area. Either reverse column lockout for manual car or a column shift car at some point? There is a visible spring about 1" long just past the arm. The parts diagrams I can find for 76-81 columns identify that as an automatic column, and the manual columns have similar arms, but no visible spring just past the arm. Can't seem to find a diagram for 70-76 cars. Anyone know what I'm talking about? Wondering if the car was an auto at some point and swapped. Photo taken from under the car. There is a 3 bolt bracket on the inner driver side subframe rail that is missing too.

Me too, and I've looked at lots of pads over the years, but wouldn't consider myself an expert, but this one really didn't look right. Thanks!

Decoding/Numbers / 70 Z28 pad engine pad
« on: February 02, 2019, 03:59:56 PM »
Hi Everybody,

I'm looking at a '70 Z28, with what is claimed to be it's original LT1. Gearbox is not numbers matching. VN built. 0010 casting code, but I have been ALL OVER the block and there is no block casting date to be found- anywhere, and they're pretty easy to find. That got me suspicious, so the seller allowed me to clean off the paint on the pad. The VIN matches, engine assy. date lines up with the cowl tag close enough (no build sheet, and no protecto,) and it's obviously correct suffix, but I'm somewhat skeptical of the broach marks on the pad. They're deeper than many that I've seen, I can catch many of the lines easily with a fingernail, and many are not running at perfectly horizontal angles, they're slightly irregular. I'm thinking a resurfacing and re-stamp. Thoughts?
