Yes it is a fluke.. I put in 69 VIN with bogus last 6 numbers and got the same result.

I rebuilt my manual steering box and adjusted it out of the car to get it close then made small final adjustment after re-install.  It's really important to get it "centered" in the travel.
Out of the car the force required to rotate the input should noticeably get higher when you approach the center of travel, with the highest resistance at dead center of travel.  Once back in the car, I loosed the nut and adjusted the bolt just slightly to stiffen it up to my liking.  Since you're not sure how it got loose, I would pull it and try to reset it on the bench, then re-install and see if it got better. There are some good Youtube videos on rebuilding and setting these Saginaw units.

I am in the middle of a manual steering thingy myself and was looking on YT for videos. I came across one for the 5679142 box. Any links you could PM me or post?

I noticed that deep groove too. Chain bolted to head for engine torque, rear bumperettes taken off and manual steering... Shes a racer!

Thanks Kurt. I did see that and other resources. I was hoping it could get some correct part / foging numbers so make a mistake with wrong parts

I just read the current online ad for it. Ohio dealer is pretty adamant that its a real Z. The fact that it didn't sell 2X at Mecum with no paperwork tells the story..

Sounds like a nice car. Listen to that little voice in your head. We all know that there are many more 69 Z's in existence today than were ever built at NOR/LOS. One of the core members might know of this car or have see TT before. Might be in database. If the TT can be authenticated by an expert, that would go a long way as the car shows X33. Real Z's are at a premium these days.

If I was a dealer in possession of the car, I would buck up for an inspection by JM or the like and an NCRS report. If verified a true Z, the cost of the inspection would be chump change compared to the increased value of the car. My two cents..

Thank you Jon. Thats what I was looking for. I dont like how my power steering feels and I drive the car to get that visceral driving experience. So manual steering is what im prob going to do.

General Discussion / 69 SS BB Manual Steering "downgrade"
« on: February 23, 2024, 02:09:50 PM »
Im kicking around the idea of going to manual steering from my current power steering set up. Steering arm length / pitman length etc is getting a bit confusing to me after reading up on them. My car is a factory 4 speed BB car with non tilt factory column and front disks.

I have a 5679142 Camaro gear that is dated for my car.

I would like to know the proper GM part numbers for:
1) Correct GM part number pitman arm (short or long) whichever is correct
2) Correct GM part number for L&R steering arms
3) Correct rag joint coupling kit

Maybe someone can chime in with a parts list for this project.
