General Discussion / John Z
« on: December 23, 2009, 03:33:02 PM »
Hi John, Was at the Covette museum yesterday with my son and saw your picture mounted in the dome as a Corvette hall of fame member. Pretty prestigious company. Also saw the Corvette assembly line. Amazing technology there. Just the manufacturing of the Aluminum side rail was awesome! Merry Christmas.

Maintenance / Failing starter
« on: August 24, 2009, 07:30:51 PM »
I just replaced the starter on my 69 Z last fall, and now I think it is failing. Starts fine when cold, but when the engine has been running and is hot, nothing. 2 questions: IS there supposed to be some sort of heat shield mounted with the starter, and if so, is heat causing this early failure? Or did I just get a faulty rebuild? Car is driven weekends, nice days. Probably started no more than 30 times since I replaced the starter. I do have the bracket installed on the end of the starter which adds support and takes cantilevered load off the 2 block mounting bolts.

If I need a heat shield, who would supply? GM NAPA? I'm concerned with function not originality.

Have seen an ad for doing a search on VINs.  govdmvrecords.com. Anybody know anything about it, or whether it actually works?

General Discussion / Assembly Manuals
« on: July 22, 2009, 12:35:45 PM »
I have a copy of the Chevrolet Assy manual for a 69 Camaro. It appears that this manual is for the Chevrolet side assy. I'm assuming  there also was different assy manual used on the Fisher side? Are copies of this available?

Originality / Outer 1/4 window fuzzies

Is part #7725935 the correct one for a 69 Camaro coupe LH (Driver's side) rear quarter window outside fuzzy? Std interior if that matters.

Is there any spray can paint out there that matches a the black 69 dash? I want to touch up ash tray door. If not what color would be used during a restoration?

General Discussion / Chevrolet Assembly Line sequence Numbers
« on: February 24, 2009, 08:45:13 PM »
After reading John Z's article on the Camaro assembly process, I understand that the cars were locked in the assembly line numerically by the "sequence number". In looking at the example of a broadcast copy from Jerry M's book, I see the sequence number is 3 digits, 600 and something. Were the sequence numbers for a given day's production?, ie, reset every day at 1, and continuing up to 912 each day? Then reset the next day? I also noticed there was a box for the date on the example broadcast copy, but it was left blank.

General Discussion / Broadcast Sheets
« on: February 16, 2009, 03:46:06 PM »
I've noticed that there were two broadcast sheets used to build a Camaro, body and chassis. Was one for the Fisher assembly, and one for the Chevrolet assembly?. Body broadcast = Fisher? Chassis broadcast = Chevrolet?

General Discussion / VIN # versus production line
« on: January 14, 2009, 01:37:20 PM »
I know that cars were not  assembled by VIN no. That is, consecutive VIN's were not necessarily next to each other on the assembly line. What about the order no., eg my car's is NOR122144 on the trim tag. This was the order number generated when the order was placed by the dealer, correct? I'm assuming this number had nothing to do with assembly sequence?  Was there some other sequential number used for orders on the assembly line?

Maintenance / Radiator Maintenance
« on: January 13, 2009, 09:53:55 PM »
I have found that my car sitting most of the time is very hard on the radiator. What do others do to prevent radiator deterioration in a car that isn't driven everyday?

Originality / 15 x 7 AD wheels
« on: November 18, 2008, 01:10:10 PM »
Would a manuf date of 2-13 make sense on 15 x 7 AD wheels. When did YH wheels replace them in production?

Originality / 69 Z Clutch Fan
« on: October 23, 2008, 08:25:34 PM »
Was there a sheet metal piece covering part of the clutch on these fans? Mine looks similar to the picture of the Eaton type clutch shown in the CRG report, but I have an inner circle of fins visible on mine, like mine cover piece is missing? My outer circle of fins looks identical.

Maintenance / Starting problems
« on: October 10, 2008, 01:43:55 AM »
I'm trying to  finish up replacing a clutch in my 69 Z. In the process of getting the clutch back in I pulled the motor, and now have everything re-installed.

In trying to fire the motor, it fires intermittently, but won't run. I removed the distributor when I pulled the motor, and have re-installed it. It is not timed exactly yet, but it should be close enough. Rotor is approx lined up with number 1 cylinder on dist cap when 1 is. at top dead center. Doubled checked with compression to make sure I'm not 360 off.

Distributor has pertronix ignition replacing points with black wire to coil negative, red wire to coil  positive. Ignition wires from car harness to coil positive. Condenser and tach send are on coil negative.

Nothing else has been removed or changed on the motor adjustment wise. Could this be the coil? I've always thought coil either worked or did not. It was workng fine when the motor was pulled, but could this be a weak spark? I'm in the process of installing new coil just to be sure.

I have also installed new plugs, thinking old ones might be fouled, but no improvement. Old plugs had 5 cylinders looking sooty black with 3 showing some brownish Nestles quick color like they were the only ones firing?

Pardon me if I'm missing something simple here.

Any ideas appreciated.

Maintenance / 69 Z questions
« on: September 02, 2008, 04:24:20 PM »
Am working on my 69 Z and have two questions:

1. I'm trying to remove the clutch fan/pulley from the water pump; Have removed the nuts from the studs, but the fan and pulley don't want to come off. I don't want to doing prying, etc. or I'll need a new water pump. Anyone have this problem and a solution?

2. I need to re-wrap some wiring in the engine bay. What is the tape that I need? Original looks like black friction tape? Wires are to starter so come close to engine block. Anything that resists heat that might be recommended?

Thanks,

Jimmy V.
