I am in the market to buy a Camaro and it seems that 90% of all the cars for sale have questionable markings. How can I look at a DZ number or cowl tag and know if its real or not?
-
Post high resolution pictures here and we can tell you if they're real or fake.

I will when I get it, but I was curious how I can spot it myself.
-
Could you take a look at this one for me.
Thanks

The reasons have been given many times for not sharing this information. KIM it takes years of experience and many hours evaluating samples within CRG’s data base to become proficient. Just post pics like Ed suggested and he and others will guide you in the right direction.
In addition, spend some time running advanced searches on this very topic and begin compiling your own reference material. Before you know it, you too will become proficient at spotting fakes. But even then I would suggest letting the pros give their final blessing. It certainly isn't as simple as one would think. Especially when the bottom line involves large sums of cash. ;)

Sapple89 - Just in case this car isn't in CRG's database it would be to your best interest to get a pic (if you don't already have one) of the engine pad so it can be evaluated here as well.
BTW, there is a pic of the e-pad in the link you sent me but it's one of the worst I've seen...a much better photo will be needed.
Here's the tag;
-
The X33 tag above is a reproduction tag.
-
The other red flag is the seller stating the engine is, “The Correct Engine”. This usually means it isn’t original to the car.

Yeah a late September of 69 3970010 block in a late December of 68 Z28 might indicate its not the original engine. Post February of 69 angled headrest seats sort of indicate it might not even be a late december of 68 car, ad says it has chambered exhaust, but it just has N10 dual exhaust.

yeah, i would be checkin hidden vins on THAT one!

I'm no expert but I believe it's a fake.

That seller always has Z's for sale on eBay. I think just about everyone I've seen him have listed is questionable.

Beware of this seller. I asked him about the trim tag. He said it is real cause his brother bought this car new and that's the tag that came on it. Kinda funny cause a while back he had a black Z for sale and I question him on it and he said the same thing except a friend of his bought it new.
-
I have seen that seller before have 3 69Z's listed on ebay at the same time all with incorrect tags.
-
Did anyone ever tell you guys that you're pretty good ?
I looked at this series when it was first posted - I got real curious about the statement from Mark that the tag was a repop, so I compared it my known original X77 tag - I'm no expert, but I see what Mark was talking about - there are differences, very subtle, but there - whatever individual or company repopped the tag got pretty darn close - close enough to fool a lot of people I'm sure.
Just my opinion, but I agree with the general consensus. Bogus.

Well I too was kinda tired of seeing this guys cloned cars being pitched as original every week for years! I have gotten in email fights with him in the past. So I called him on it and told him to call Jerry M. for an inspection. Here is his reply....
and I quote, " Jerry is like you don't know anything about 69 camaro's "
Cheers Steve

Now here is something even funnier than that statement. This sentence is grammatically incorrect. It should say ,"Jerry is like you, he ALSO doesn't know anything about Camaro's. 10 words and he can't pull it off. Oh well to funny. Nice car but MAJOR issues and just another pretty 30K Camaro with nice paint.........Danny
-
I asked him about the black z he had and heard he knew the car since it was new. That tag was obviously fake. Haven't seen it for a while
-
Yes he just pumps these fake cars out like water. 10 10 Cars are super scarce in original condition but he seems to always have one laying around... ;D ....Danny

Danny, I hope you replied you " I know a FAKE when I see it". LOL

69z28302,
Gee... what ever do you mean. Cause you know Jerry and I know nothing about 69 Camaros.... Right?... Ha Ha ;)
I would say I have a pretty good working knowledge as just a regular back yard car guy. But Jerry M. is at the top of the knowledge list as far as I am concerned. I wonder if he seen this discussion?... Danny
