General Discussion / Re: Found Camaros, Not For Sale...
« on: May 11, 2007, 06:11:32 PM »
Being a young guy (28) and in Vermont, I have seen NO first gen camaros that are rotting away in the weeds.  With the amount of salt and crud we use in the winter, it is rare to see something like an '86 Chevy pickup in decent shape, let alone a 60's car.

Guess its nice to not have the "I'm going to restore it." hearbreak.....

It wou
I think the stamping on LA Muncies depended on the mood of the plant worker.
It would be comical to find one stamped about 100 times all over the place by a pissed off, stressed out worker!!!!

Originality / Re: Chambered exhaust
« on: March 05, 2007, 01:09:17 PM »
For another opinion....the previous owner of my Z put a chambered system on that he got from Year One; the fit is pretty poor, and one of the pipes had to be bent by hand to fit.  I have to loosen up all of the brackets and hangers every couple months, realign the tailpipes, shim it with wood to keep it steady, then retighten.  One of the tailpipes will occasionally bang against the bottom of the passengers quarter panel, and its very difficult to get the rear resonators to sit parallel with the ground.  Of course they welded most of the joints, so adjustment is minimal.

I've heard nothing but great things about Gardner's stuff.....

I'll ask him what the numbers on his car are.  Boy that would be crazy if your motor and his car matched.  I just cannot tell you how frustrating it is to listen to, and watch this guy.

When the first of the ZZ-series crate motors came out at GM (I have no idea when....mabye 80's), he bought a brandy spankin' new "ZZZ" 9.8:1 crate engine.  It is still sitting in his garage, wrapped up in the crate and plastic it came in.  Never touched.  He has a '68 Z, '69 6-banger, '70 Z, all kinds of awesome body parts and what not, and is going to give it all to his son.

The kid will probably get a drug problem and sell it all off for a grand.....

arrrrgh....the frustration.  The damn '68 sits under a mile from me, right now.

A friend of mine has a '68 Z that he's had for years and years, but its without the original motor, actually ANY motor...I'll track down his numbers and see if maybe, just maybe his motor is around here.

Unfortunately, he's one of those guys that will never sell anything, and if a motor costs $2000, but will make the value of his car go up $20,000, he sees that as losing $2,000 out of pocket.  Very frustrating to see....

This is the guy that claims to have a partial VIN on the "elephant ear" inner fender, whatever that is.

At the bottom of his listing, it shows this question.....
------------------------
Q: What is the elephant ear? In your description you said: 'I have also checked on the elephant ear...'

A: There is a small part on the passenger side inner fender where the VIN is also stamped. It's called the 'elephant ear' in the lingo. Thanks for the interest. Craig

General Discussion / Re: Car Insurance
« on: February 23, 2007, 09:14:16 PM »
good points Jim.

I have Hagerty on my '69, and its $239/yr.  I have one car with them, have never been a customer of theirs, or any other collector car insurance company.  I got the "Joe Schmoe" rate, per say; no discounts for multi-cars or being a long time customer, but no rate hikes because of a claim.  They say that I cannot exceed 3,500 miles per year, and that it must be kept in a locked garage.  The mileage does not bother me in the least because in Vermont, 3500 miles in a season puts it around 20 miles per day, if I drove every single day of the late spring, summer and early fall.

How is it that 38 year old technology produced better parts than we can get repro now?
Because 38 years ago, the parts were made by folks who cared, and were made to go on cars heading for the dealership.  Today, they are made by overseas sweatshops that bang out widgets at an amazing rate, but they have no clue what the parts go on, and even less care about whether they fit or not.

At peak operation, Norwood was rolling about 1,500 cars per day off the line.

That's about double, dude. Norwood did around 800 Camaros per workday. Don't go by body tag dates and VINs. Do the math-165,300 cars between the start of 1969 production [08D] and June 30, 1969, maybe 212 workdays.
sorry....fat-fingered the calculator on that one.

11,490 cars between my 10C and your 11A.  At peak operation, Norwood was rolling about 1,500 cars per day off the line.  At that rate, we're ~8 days apart based on VIN.

I have 19N521696 (10C) , VI009DZ and the VIN is stamped in the pad, not down by the filter. Block casting J18 on a 3932386 block.

12B was the cutoff for x-codes; anything after 12B will have one, prior to 12B won't, and 12B seems to be split either way.  Have you pulled your rear seat to see if there is an X7 on the rear bulkhead?

Forging paperwork, trim tags, restamped parts and lying sellers will NEVER make it less enjoyable for me to drive my car.  I'd enjoy the car as much if it were worth $500 or $200,000.

That's funny that you say that Jerry.  I saw a lot of nice looking "oh, this baby's original original, barn fresh, survivor, 1-owner, documented, matching, verified, blah blah) camaros bring less than I'd expected.
