Title: Cragars on 1967
Post by: jason93 on February 18, 2016, 01:54:03 PM
Hello,

I know there's been a decent amount of cragar discussions but I was hoping to get some specific info related to my restoration. Long story short, I'm restoring my old mans old drag car (67 Camaro) which I found after 27 years in a garage from the same family he sold it too. I know he ran cragars on it and I believe they were 15x10's on the rear but they could have been 14's.

My question to the knowledgeable folks here is can I run cragars either 15x10 or 14x10 on the rear without any issues like clearance, brakes fit, etc? I would like to upgrade to disc brakes but not sure if they'll fit? I've seen one gentlemans fathers green car on here with 14x10's and they looked good. Any pics of your cars with either of these two wheel sizes and any helpful info to provide me as I look to purchase these? Should I try to find vintage Cragars or will the new stuff look the same and be just as good?

Thanks a lot for all the help.

Since you made a thread I figured I'd answer here instead of the pm..  I'm sure there are others that can give the info before I am able but if not I can get you the backspacing on the 14x10 Cragars I run on the green & blue cars tonight.  There won't be any issues with the 10" wide wheel. If you decide to go disc brakes then I would suggest the 69 and later single piston style caliper.  The 14x6 Cragars did not clear the 4 piston calipers & required a little grinding &/or spacer.  As far as new Cragars vs vintage they are very similar but there are difference in the shapes of the spokes. Most won't notice the difference.  Hopefully that helps. .  Also while pics are being asked for; post up some of your dads old ride.!!..   :D

Back spacing is the key. I have a couple of sets of 8.5in wide Centerlines that are the standard BSpacing. I wanted the deep dish appearance opposed to the shallower offset 8.5s. Now my car is a 69, but L60 15s rubbed the lip and that was BITD when the lip was rusted off!

One more reason 67&8's are superior..

Cook_dw, thanks for the info and yes I would appreciate the backspacing on both the cars when you have time. Are they both running the same size wheels? So if I understand you correctly, I can run discs on the rear no problem, but I should run the 69 style calipers on the front and will require some spacing? I didn't realize there was a difference in the wheels so that's helpful on old vs. new. I think I will try and find a some old ones and have them re-plated.

As for pics, of course we only have a few but maybe you or some others can tell me if these look like 15's or 14s on my old mans old car. And thanks for the help!

While were at it, what size fronts do you think he ran as well? 15x4.5?

I can not say whether or not discs will work on the rear of these cars & the wheels.  I personally haven't tried.  I was referring to the fronts only.  Great pics of the car..  Love it!!

Btw it's only one set of wheels ran on both cars.

Was your fathers car originally a big block?  I see 427 on the hood scoop but hard to make out if it had cross flag emblems on the fenders...

There was a really good article in one of the muscle car mags lately about how fiqure back spacing, frame and wheel well clearance, and some disc brake info. It,s purpose was to measure before you buy. I can try to find it (in the reading room under sink) if some needs the issue and date.

Btw the backspacing on the 14x10s is 3.75"
