I bought the harness to my starter and wondered if anyone else ran into the differences I found.
The new one has no insulated wires to the starter, both of my originals are
Wires to the coil on AAW, one is insulated, both of my stock ones are.
The connector on the wiper is brown, original black. The jumper from one connector to the other is the wrong color.
The heater fan wire is an inch shorter and different boot. Probably no big deal but different.
I figured at least the wires would be the right color or covering. The ones on the wiper and coil will be pretty visable.

You ordered the FactoryFit line or classic update from American Auto Wire??
-
factory fit
-
I'd give their support line a call if the installation manual or online pdf doesn't make note of any color and wire type changes.
-
Brian I don't want to hijack Bill's thread, but when I bought the entire Factory Fit harnesses for my car, there was no installation manual with any of the individual harnesses, and the only online PDF instructions I could find on AAW's site were for the Classic Update series. Are these now available for FF?

those braided wire covers on the starter and coil wires were made out of asbestos, probably won't be seing them on any current production wire harnesses.
-
One of the coil wires is covered. Not sure why only one. I did see in the AIM the correct color of wiper motors wires are listed. I might reuse my yellow wire and discard the brown connector.
-
I found the same differences about 3 years ago when I replaced my harness. The connector color is wrong in the headlights harness too. I sent them a email with pictures, and got no response.

The covered (Heat insulated) wire to the coil is a resistor wire that will get warm. That is why it is covered. The other wires are vinyl covered only.

Only the modified harnesses come with or have PDF files to the best of my knowledge - that is why I asked if he had a set. It might help if the part number was posted. Maybe it is a modified factory fit for higher amp alternator and not a true factory replacement harness. Best bet is still to call AAW's support team.

I called today and the guy I got acknowledged the one coil wire should be yelow and the connector should be black. He checked with their R&D and they believe there were some changes in the production year. I am pretty sure my harness was never out of the car and the wires share the same ends, insulated or not.
-
Factory wire harnesses - non gauge engine harness has only one of the wires covered however every gauge equipped car I have seen has had both covered with the "white woven covering".
Original from early 10D non gauge car

Thanks James. I thought you ran into an issue like this but I couldn't find it. It's odd this was done.
-
Yes and the temp sending unit connector was wrong, it was threaded stud vs nail head - car is BB with gauges. I annealed the old end after sliding it out of the clip and then bent the tabs up and removed it put it on the new wire crimped then soldered it.
-
I didn't appreciate the guy telling me my car was wrong. You can clearly see it was never apart. He checked with R&D and they thought there was a change from early cars. He did admit the one wire is completely the wrong color and I believe the color is in the AIM too. Annoying to order what is believed to be correct replacement and it's not the right color. Not hard to correct on their part.

The bracket which bolts to the bell housing is coated on the original and is bare on the repro, are they using black harness clips again or are they still white?

Is the coating a paint? One they sent was cad plated. I just got the harness to my starter, header had worked on it a bit.
-
Its coated to keep from cutting the wires.. MY original harness on the 67 & both 8's are the same as what James posted above.
-
Ok yeah the new one wasn't. I thought I might swap mine
-
No not paint like plasti dip.
-
The wiper motor wiring as mine came exactly like the original. I used my original to make up a test set up. I need to check that bell housing bracket (pretty sure I used the original)! Thanks James!

Wonder why the 69 is different when chick's has the same colored wire and connector as mine? Shaking my head!
-
The plastic can be changed out easily if the brown bothers you or you can remove it, paint it and then reinsert the leads. ;)
I'll have to look at my jumper wire, thought it was blue.
-
Guy I talked to acted like mine was made wrong. I was like well it needs fixed!
