Great shots James.
-
Thanks if anyone wants specific paint details let me know I am in Colorado for the next week playing and working on the L78 vert.
-
I want to see the paint on the LB vert before and after. I assume that is the one you are working on..??..
-
we clay barred half the deck lid and Meguires #7 it, the metallics just do not hold as well as solids. It is beginning to take a gloss though.
-
I know exactly what you mean. I battled the green paint and you can still see the micro checking in the paint with a magnifier.. All I can do is let the #7 soak for several days at a time and hope it wont get worse.
-
great pics. What is the build date of this car?
(should this be in the survivor topic category?)
-
Yes, it wouldn't allow me to post in that forum... go figure

good pics James. You have a great eye for the (from a far) ordinary, and zooming in and showing us what we should be observing.
I appreciate your time, and posting the pics. ;)
-
The orange peel is just beautiful on the Yenko, no one has ever cut the paint or polished on it.
-
It is REALLY good to see the imperfections, part of sending things down an assembly line. Just goes to show you how over-restored some cars are these days. This type of paint quality can easily be done in a temporary paint booth setup in a garage. Really no need for a BC/CC paint job if you can get access to lacquer paint and do it yourself. If the car is going to be garaged most of the time and not out in the sun a lot, the lacquer will hold up. For a daily driver, BC/CC is required.
Please post more pics as time allows. Would like to see more of the underside of the car and more of the door jambs.
THANKS!
Edit to fix wording...

It appears that the rockers were painted yellow either in the Chevrolet touch up at the end of assembly or at Yenko?
The fenders have no indication of a tape line for the lower blackout but the rockers were black at one time.

What is the mileage? Can you give us any details on the history of the car, like where it has been?
-
One owner 66k miles Bill Hunter bought it new and Dave bought the car from him this past jan.
Been in enclosed storage it's entire life mostly in AZ.
Chased it for 2 years before being asked to make an offer on it.
Bill bought 2 Yenkos... the first was Hugger Orange, he blew the engine up (windowed the block) the first day returned to Gates Chevrolet and traded the Orange car and $150 for this Daytona Yellow one. He had the paperwork, Yenko Window sticker on both cars, the complete original exhaust system and smog which was removed immediately.
-
Very impressive that he kept it all those years.
-
Two threads on Yenko pertaining to the car.

I thought this was a good detail pic too.

Did Yenko paint the grill or swap it out for the grey one? I know X66 came blacked out, but with Yenko modifying so much, has it been confirmed that GM painted this black out? I've seen a few interesting tape lines, but that one is pretty squared off at some points. Beautiful survivor!!!
-
It would be good to find out if he got the car with the rockers painted yellow. I wonder at what point they were changed from black to yellow.
-
I had the same question Bryon...
-
The fenders were never blacked out the grille was always silver from the factory... the rockers were shot with the spears installed, either at the end of Chevrolet assembly in the touch up or at Yenko, however I doubt Chevrolet let the cars leave with different lower colors so best guess is they were shot yellow at Chevrolet Assembly, some early cars had blacked out lowers, fenders and rockers.
-
I asked Bill (William) about this. The X66 told the Fisher side to do the lower blackout. But on theChevrolet side, the COPO designation was in effect. So yes, the Chevrolet side of the assembly painted the lowers yellow and used yellow fenders. I hope I got that right.
Are there any known COPOs with original paint and lower blackout?
-
Now, I am a little confused? Regarding grille color: Did not all COPOs come with the Argent grille? Did Yenkos come with Black? I have looked at so many conflicting pictures , I am not 100% sure? I am sure COPOs came with Argent, just need clarification on Yenkos. Was there ever a Yenko with RS?
-
The grill in this car is correct.
There are some RS COPOs, but I can't think of any RS Yenkos at the moment.
-
I'm confused too.... need some expert clear clarification... :)
1) Are ALL 1969 Yenko Camaros also COPO9561?? OR did Yenko convert some 69's totally themselves (as they did '67-68) before 9561 was initiated?
2) wasn't the COPO 9561 a 'mechanical modification' within the factory?? ie. installing the 427 engine?? and didn't the Yenko dealership perform the cosmetic modifications??
3) If (2) is true, WHY would GM perform a special 'cosmetic' modification (ie. painting over the Fisher blackout on X66 cars)??
-
All 1969 Yenko's were 9561's and 9537's
NO RS YENKO's in 1969...
Gary,
The 9561 triggered an exception or modification of the L78.
There are sheets from GM showing the deleting of emblems and engine CUI call outs.
The reason they started with the L78 was it was the easiest way to get the correct suspension and other items, XT wheels etc.
The 9561 added the ZL2, L72, and HD 4.10 which also triggered HD cooling (curved neck radiator).
The 9537 added the 15" wheels and the 140 speedometer.
As far as the lower black out goes... it would have only been an issue on the initial 50 cars as they were the only X66 coded Yenko's.
The remaining 150 cars were either X11 - lower blackout or X44 no lower blackout.
One could imagine if Fisher Norwood were the final assembly point then the first 50 may have received black grilles, however Chevrolet Norwood was the final assembly point and thus we are not faced with that quandary.
-
Thanks James.... :) that helps...
-
9537 also added the 13/16 sway bar didn't it James?
-
9537 also added the 13/16 sway bar didn't it James?
Yes
-
9537 also added the 13/16 sway bar didn't it James?
Yes
James meant 9737 sports car conversion not 9537.
-
Do you have any more pics of the engine bay and/or trunk? Does it have the original spare tire?
-
So I'm confused now. Yenko's had black grilles? Is that what I'm reading? I can't tell for sure the one pictured is black, but it looks too dark to be silver?
-
Thanks for the correction Steve... yes 9737.
69 Yenko's had silver grilles.
Here is a picture of the overspray which migrates from the rear as only the front of the argent section was masked.

I asked Bill (William) about this. The X66 told the Fisher side to do the lower blackout. But on the Chevrolet side, the COPO designation was in effect. So yes, the Chevrolet side of the assembly painted the lowers yellow and used yellow fenders. I hope I got that right.
Are there any known COPOs with original paint and lower blackout?
I am not sure on the above, based on some recent information on an original paint early Yenko. Just don't take it for gospel. It may have happened that way on some cars, but maybe not all.
-
Byron, I have seen a couple of Original paint early cars in EARLY photos which appear to have the rockers black, so I am going to say they may have been both ways.

Thanks James. It's Bryon. no big deal on the mis-spelling. :)
-
it appears to be full gloss unpolished lacquer
Thankyou ..............................
-
I would like to see more pics of the tail pan. The pics I see don't seem to show unbuffed full gloss.
-
I think Phil gave a great understanding as to why some cars have more gloss than others.

First of all When I got the Black RS/Z28 out of 35 year storage this is tail pan looked like... So anyone claiming the paint on their car pulled out of a barn or field shows the original finish they need to clay bar and add some Mirror glaze No7 to get anywhere close to what it may have looked like.
