Title: 68 z smog system
Post by: 427-KING on September 27, 2012, 06:16:07 PM
Have a smog system from a 1968 z28. Taken off by the original owner in 1968 w less than 500 miles . Sitting in his attic for 44 years until last month. has a shallow groove pulley, nothing is altered, modified or ever changed. I have read that others[including one person that took it off when new] have seen this, was there a time frame when it may have happened?  Pics to follow

Thanks for the info,I would have thought a 522 pulley but knew where this came from since new. Maybe it was a late in the year thing as 3 people have June cars[approx] with shallow groove pulleys on them  .

My pump is a June pump but the car is a 07C.  Being the smog equipment was added on the engine dress line at the car factory, the July date would be be the closest common date.  Do you know what week your donor car was produced?  BTW....got a photo of the pulley face?

Mine is 475xxx.  Three weeks or more with the wrong pulley???   Don't know if they ran out of the 522 or some yo-yo put on the first pulley he grabbed.

King,
What are the date codes on the Wittek hose clamps on your pump?

I've seen others.........   The pulley does not have #116 on it, it is blank, it was on "backwards",and I looked on both sides.

Never seen one blank..that is unusual.....my pulley does have the number #3927116 stamped on it.

By "backwards" do you mean the smooth side toward the pump...that seems to be what it appears in the photos.  Although the AIM states that the part number faces the pump, my original pulley had the part number facing toward the front and the smooth side facing the pump.

On my #116 pulley, there is a difference in diameter between the two sides.  The smooth side of the pulley has a slightly smaller diameter than the part number side.  Also there is about a 1/8" offset from centerline between the two sides.  Is this the same on your pulley?

If you take a supply and demand class youll see that whenever you have items no one else has, you can ask whatever you want, and will eventually get it.  Last time i checked with the outfit everyone refers people to on this site they wanted 5500.00 ,but didnt have it in stock.......... So you can pay me 3850 direct, or buy mine for 5500 thru them. I suspect the 5500 route is less painful for some.

generally speaking, I would agree. I just prefer to sell items in my lifetime.

In my opinion, ebay is the pinnacle of supply and demand. List something on there that's rare with a $1.00 starting bid and NO reserve and after 7 days you'll find out exactly what the demand is!

Thats what the demand is THAT particular week. Things change week to week, if you have the right person looking for what your selling a particular week, you could make a lot more or a lot less depending. BUT in general I agree with your statement as well, should sell in the ball park. 427 King isn't in a big hurry to sell anything, it's his stuff, if its rare he could double or triple the asking price, and thats ok,  its his prerogative.

I believe you mean you can pay me $4550.00 direct, as the drive belt in the above photos is not included for the $3850.00 price.  If anyone wants the drive belt too, Chuck is only asking $700.00 for it!

http://www.ebay.com/itm/330810591365?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

$4550.00 is more than a '68 Z/28 cost new!

Thank God I don't need a smog system for my Z, but if I did I'd buy it from Jerry and save $3000.00.

There may be demand for the smog system, that doesn't necessarily translate to a demand just for yours.

Just cant seem to find the exact ad  for an untouched as new  Day 1 takeoff system with dated belt for 1550.00 that you are referring  to. Can you post it ?

There may be even more demand for a restored unit from Jerry for the $1695. I would venture a guess that you could buy a unrestored set up from Jerry for even less. But he advertises them restored because there is more demand for such a unit.  Lets face it,  you put a nice restored unit on your car, as the years tick by it is going to look more and more like your day one unit anyways, so why pay more?

So you believe  you can get a complete ,fully restored and replated original 68 69 Z28 setup with NO  repro parts for 1695?????    Considering  a real  pulley alone goes for 900-1000.00 used on a 69 Z ,that kind of sheds some light on your incorrect claim.

I think the consensus is it money better spent. It isn't worth it to me to buy either. If I would have bought a 69 Camaro new I would have taken it off as well, and wouldn't have thought twice about it. If the one Jerry puts together passes his muster, I don't know what benefit you are getting by spending more.

Exactly my point.  You dont even know or care if the setup has repro parts in it, you only care whos selling it.....comparing a price of a system with repro parts to an as new dfday 1 takeoff and saying a few years from now they will be the same  is ignorant.  Now maybe we can go back to the content of the original post

Just about all the parts that were missing on my engine (pulleys, brackets, etc...) have now been replaced with repop. I'm sorry, but I refuse to pay STUPID prices on an original pulley, when a $50 reproduction will work just fine. Sure, I may have to "adjust" it a bit, but once it's on, no one's the wiser.

There are lots of people in the world that demand this kind of money for original smog setups, engine blocks, rear axles, or whatever, which is why my car will NEVER be "restored". Being one of the 99 percent, I just can't afford them. But unfortunately, there will always be people out there with loads more money than brains, so these parts will sell, but really, at what price? I know I'd not want to have this kind of reputation.

Ed, Well said. It's the stupid prices for "rare original" stuff that makes me glad I only have a 307 glide. I will never do a restoraton beyond driver quality. I will upgrade as I see fit for convenience, relayability and safety.  On my list are fuel injection, disk brakes, & fold down back seat.
