Title: Engine stampings
Post by: 6672DRIVER on November 08, 2016, 12:49:31 AM
Bought a '69 Camaro back in Spring, under the impression that it was not an SS (the seller was only advertising as an RS).
I posted the particulars over on the TC site, with the conclusion that it is an SS after all.

This is the thread in case anyone is interested (http://www.camaros.net/forums/15-tag-team/388137-ss-not.html)

I have no documentation, but all the correct signs are there.  I thought I should post the engine stampings, since that is really the main evidence of it being a real SS.
I would just like confirmation that the stamping look legit.  The VIN is on the casting area by the oil filter so is hard to make out, but it you zoom in on the picture, you can definitely read it.
I don't know why it didn't trigger until just recently, but I didn't realize that the 350/300hp engine was only available when ordered with the SS option. I always though that it could be ordered on a non-SS car, but that is not the case. Please confirm.

Does your car have power brake booster and pressure regulator on frame?

Any reason you did not continue with the other thread on Team Camaro?

No, no reason, other than it is now an older thread from Spring. TC has been a big help to me on other issues. No issues there.

No, deck has not been resurfaced.

How do you KNOW that the deck hasn't been resurfaced?

Just my opinion based on the photos provided:   It does *appear* to have been cut down, and ground down with a belt sander or something similar...  broach marks are not there...  but other marks are...

The 'vin' stamping on the side of the block do NOT appear to be factory, in fact, there's two different stampings with one of them having suffered an attempt to grind away...

This looks like someone's attempt to 'reproduce' an engine to me...

Sorry, I should have stated, that as far as I knew, no the deck had not been resurfaced. I've only owned the car for 6 months, so no clue what was done to it before then. I just assumed it hadn't been. I'm surprised that the vin stamping doesn't appear to be factory, as I thought it was very difficult to stamp that part of the block.  Interested in what others think.
Again, it has every other "required" SS item.
I should also mention the casting date of the block also matches the engine code stamp and and the trim tag build date.
Thanks

Good pics - that helps.
The pad stamp is original and the VIN looks OK. What is the casting date?

Were you able to see the last digit of the axle date?

Block has been lightly decked but stamping looked original to me.

Axle appears to be original too.

It's an early LOS car.
