Title: 68 Grill nuts and bolts
Post by: 68Zproject on June 22, 2009, 06:18:43 AM
I'm having a little trouble getting some original type nuts and bolts to attach the grill and mouldings to the front of my 68 Z. I'm showing a part # for the lower trim nuts in AMK's catalog as a machine threaded stamped nut.  Is this correct?  These look similar to the nuts that hold on emblems etc.  I can't tell for sure in the AIM what they look like and wondered if they were these stamped nuts and not a regular nut.
I also don't show an AMK # for the screws or nuts that hold the lower part of the grill to the valance.  The AIM part #'s are 9919303 for the screw and 3846854 for the nuts.  Anyone know what these are in AMK or can tell me the size and kind of nuts and bolts that were original?  Thanks.

PS Anyone know if the screws that hold the headlight bezels on were painted or dark phosphate?

I was hoping to have this back together for a car show this weekend.  If anyone has any original bolts that they could look at or any knowledge of what they were I would really appreciate it.

Anyone with an untouched std grill that could check or knows what the size, type and headmark of the bolt or screw  and the nuts for attaching the bottom of the grill to the valance?

Well......I looked at my original grille hardware and the closet I can come to AMK is this.

B-12081 Screw....Looks nearly the same as my original,  same dimensions, black phosphate, except my original has 3 bars inside the head.
B-12250 Spring Nut ....Similar to my original, my original looks like a (U) nut, that is the (bent) and (flat) part of the nut are the same length......... whereas the AMK nut looks more like a (J) nut, the (flat) part of the nut is shorter than the (bent) part.

My car is a 68Z, 07C, NOR

Hope this helps you,

Jerry G.

Are you saying yours was not a hex nut like the AIM shows?  Pex 68 said his was riveted.  There is a resto shop near here and they said one of theirs was put on with the spring clips too.  I also may have some info from TC soon.  I'm trying to get some pattern of how things were attached and it may change with dates.

Hope this helps you,

Yes, very much so.  Thanks again.

Yep......no hex nut like the AIM shows..... just spring nuts and pointed hex head screws.

Little more info.......

I found the #9419303 screws referenced here....not for the Camaro grille but they look the same.

I found the #3846854 nuts referenced here.....not for the Camaro grille but they look close.  The set of 8 nuts are the ones that look similar to my originals.

Sonet, Does your original clip look like places A and C and just needs to be longer at B on this AMK clip?

Thanks again Jerry.  I thought I found another place that the # was used for, but it was the 9419303, not the 9919303.  The 9419303 is used to hold the ends of the grill to the valance on the RS.  Well, at least according to the AIM and it shows it to be a screw.  Until someone can tell me their car had nuts like the AIM shows, I'm going to figure that was just one of those things that wasn't.

I found another place where the 3846854 nut was used.  It's the A/C ambient temp switch mounting nut.  C60-E1 item 13 in the AIM.  In this picture it looks more like a u-nut than a hex nut.  In fact, there's no way that could be a hex nut.  Maybe the picture for the grill was just a bad representative of what that item is.  Got me way off the path thinking it was a hex nut.  Thanks again for all your help guys.
