General Discussion / Re: 1968 396 Oil capacity?
« on: March 20, 2020, 06:08:42 PM »
I have the 4qt. pan and I'm using a wix racing filter 1qt. capacity. I think I'll hold off on the tubing cutter and do a little research on dipstick tube lengths. I'm going to compare 68/69 Corvette and Full size tube lengths.

Thanks for the link that was quite informative.

I'm going to use my small tubing cutter to trim the appropriate length off of the dipstick tube and move on. Thanks

General Discussion / 1968 396 Oil capacity?
« on: March 19, 2020, 12:25:35 AM »
I'm taking the motor to be dynoed Monday. I added 5 quarts of oil and filter and primed the motor. The dipstick says I can add another quart of oil. I bought a GM dipstick(yellow tip), tube and oil pan when you could still buy them from GM. I'm leaning towards cutting the tube to get the correct reading. I'm thinking adding the extra oil could be detrimental to the motor. The pan is correct, the motors been in the car, has yellow tip dipstick, only leaves the tube. Was the 5 quarts with the filter a hard and fast number? Thanks Paul

General Discussion / Re: Rear End Housing Spring Perch Welding
« on: February 27, 2020, 07:19:03 PM »
Just use the google machine there are several examples. It's basically a solid shaft that goes through the axle tubes and the housing with bushings for the axle bearings and carrier bearing to make sure everything is straight and true when you start and the same when you finish welding on it.

Originality / Steering Coupler Nuts
« on: January 24, 2020, 08:07:14 PM »
I cleaned up a original steering coupler for a 1968 Camaro, however the nuts and lock washers were missing. I've seen the parts vendors selling replacements in what I believe is gold cadmium plating, zinc plating or a combination of both. What is correct? Thank Paul

Originality / Re: 1968 Camaro Power Steering Hose Bracket?

I'll try and determine the original finish, clean it up and reinstall it. Thanks for the replies

Bert,
You must have that assembly manual memorized. Mine is frayed, covers missing, pages curled and I still get cross eyed looking through it. Thanks for the info

Originality / 1968 Camaro Power Steering Hose Bracket?
« on: January 14, 2020, 01:29:24 AM »
This Steering box originated on a 1968 Chevelle. This hose bracket was on it when I removed it from the Chevelle. It had the correect date code so I had it rebuilt to Camaro specs.. They reistalled the bracket after they rebuilt it. Did Camaros have that bracket on it or was it specific to a 1968 Chevelle? Thanks

General Discussion / Re: What is this fuel pump ?

Wow, Classic Industries lists the repo for $441. Was thinking about up grading to that pump since I hot rodded my motor. At that price I think I'll get by with the 396/375 pump.

General Discussion / Re: 67 gauge Bezel

Well, If somebody has come up with a way to accurately replicate the factory I'm all ears. I've heard, it turned out good, it is close, looks pretty good, but have yet to hear it turned out perfect looks just like the factory.

The best option explained to me was to have the original bezel chromed at one of the companies that chromes plastic. I talked to a rep. about doing it. He said they would chrome the entire bezel and then repaint the painted surfaces. They couldn't chrome just the flat surfaces, that was 10 years ago. He wouldn't give me a price with out seeing the piece. I wasn't sure what the quality of the final product was going to be so I didn't move forward.

I used the chrome appliques the Camaro houses are selling. I'm not excited with the results. They are a little wider than the original surface and the longevity of the adhesive is suspect, just sitting on the dining room table for a couple weeks they started lifting. I have old bezel maybe I'll try the testers paint. The guys on Youtube sure have great results with those chrome pens. I saw one guy that had a Quart can and was applying it with a large paint brush, it sure looked good. Must have been creative editing.

Maintenance / Re: Holly choke
« on: December 19, 2019, 11:08:50 PM »
Do you need the choke to work or do you want the rod for aesthetics? I just had a 1972 Holley 800 DP/ spreadbore with a mechanical choke rebuilt by a individual the builds racing/performance carbs. He as well as the man that built my motor(431ci) said a choke is not necessary. I ask because the rebuilder returned all the choke part with the carb. There is a lever that rides on a shaft that the choke rod rides attaches to and operates the butterfly. On my carb the butterfly and operating rod has been removed. I reinstalled the rod from the manifold to the aforementioned lever so it apears the choke is connected and working. If you remove the air breather the smart people will notice the disception.

As an aside I drove 355 small block with single plane tall victor jr. 306 duration 540 lift mechanical camshaft and 750DP on the street for years with no choke and it started and ran fine. Never tried it in 30 degree weather though.

General Discussion / Re: 69 original rear bumper identification

Just google Automotive bumper rechroming you'll get some hits. The companies have a jig they use to straighten the bumpers before rechroming. If you attend any of the large swap meets usually there are rechomers that bring bumpers they have already rechromed for resale.

If you were attaching the vin to a NEW body, I would think the last thing you would want to do would be attach it out of kilter and draw attention to it. If you were doing a rebody the hole would already be there from GM.

Originality / Re: Turn signal shaft knob?
« on: November 20, 2019, 01:21:59 AM »
I believe a 2 part epoxy would work. I wasn't sure if the poor fit was because I purchased a poor reproduction knob or that is the way they are all made.

I'm sure you could have a original rechromed, but NOS(service replacements) are readily available on E-Bay for $20 or so. Either way you would be where I am, attaching a repo knob. Thanks Paul
