Title: VIN tag problem
Post by: william on June 04, 2023, 09:05:07 PM
https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1969-chevrolet-camaro-264/

I have no explanation for this. All domestic 1969 Camaro VINs started at 500001. Body tag looks real but has clearly been re-installed.

Curious if Chevrolet ever re-vin'd cars that were removed from the assembly line for repairs or for any other reason? I'm sure there would be complications with the DOT for such changes and that might make it unlikely to do so.

Could it be something like a Dynacorn bodied car?

The upper dash has been replaced.  I see only two possibilities.

1. Legitimate factory error.
2. Fake VIN tag.

As previously posted, when a VIN tag was damaged in the assembly plant, it was brought to computer operations and a duplicate was made.  The damaged VIN tag was sent back to Central Office in Detroit as we had to account for every tag.

My guess, serialized in error as a Firebird. They were in that range for 09C [1969] builds at Norwood.

They didn't always feel the need to correct errors.

I agree - it looks like a factory tag with a misstamp. Which means the it was either supposed to be 9N612306 which would line up with the trim tag, or they mixed up the VIN sequence number with the Firebirds (and the tag was swapped).
You'd have to check the hidden VIN to find out, but I'd guess it was a typo 9N112306 instead of 9N612306.
I can think of at least 4 VIN typos on 69's - hard to catch typos like that, the VIN wasn't used in the plant to track the vehicle so very few people looked at it.

IIRC,  the rivets should have some sealer over them....some more than others....some with fingerprints.
