Title: 1969 Rally Sport Door Hinge Finish
Post by: Edgemontvillage on June 14, 2015, 01:14:01 AM
Trying to determine how the large RS headlight door hinge (GM PN 3945711) was finished at the Norwood factory, NOS hinges are natural aluminum or maybe pot metal and originals I've seen have are often black due to aging or perhaps due to a primer finish applied at the plant?

Pictures don't show it very well - but bet I've got with me.  Mine were black and I left them that way.

Another photo of an original RS door hinge showing no finish.

A photo of the RS door hinge from my (former) original paint 10 10 car (Norwood 4C). Can't tell if the partial blackout is paint or natural ageing of the pot metal due to time and elements. Some of the hinge shows the untreated metal casting.

Since there haven't been many submissions on this thread I thought I'd add one more in support of my conclusion that the normative supplier practice was for 1969 RS door hinges to be painted black. On my current RS/Z project I've begun work restoring the RS door assemblies and during (dry) media blasting I ran into a lot of thick paint accumulation along corners and casting seams which I've encountered on other unrestored parts and is tell-tale of original dip painting. Other examples including from my previous cars show varying degrees of (black) paint coverage and some were entirely unpainted. I'd say they were expected to receive paint.

Mine are painted black and one also has undercoating on a 25K mile car.     Early 09B Norwood car.

Lloyd -

Mine appear black - some pics before I started the restoration.  Note that the car had been painted a few times, but mostly left original underneath.   The paint was pretty light though, not like the images of the hinge doors in your post.

Thanks for posting Hans, great photos. Its clear the hinge was painted on your car too and your observation that the paint coverage varied is consistent with my former 10 10 RSZ shown in Post #4. I can also see the front cover backing plate was also painted.

Interesting comparison between your post #4 for your prior 10 10 car and mine.   Looks very similar in coverage, color, etc.  Mine of course is a VN built Z, one week before (04B) for you 10 10 Z.    I wonder if the hinge doors were painted at the supplier vs at the plant, hence the similar paint application?

And yes, the front door coverings were black on my car.

Yes, I agree with your observations. The hinge from your LOS RS/Z and my former NOR RS/Z appear to have been spray painted rather than dip painted in contrast with the hinge from my current project.

The L78 pacer also had the HEAVY accumulation in the recesses.
