I just recently noticed that when I change the oil and filter cartridge in my 1967 Camaro SS, after adding 5 quarts the dipstick reads about a half quart low. Is this normal or do I perhaps not have the correct dipstick for the L48 350? The owner's manual states that the engine should take 5 quarts when changing the oil and filter, and 4 quarts when just changing the oil.

There are three elements; the oil pan, dipstick tube and dipstick. One must be incorrect.
-
One other thing, the filters they sell for small blocks today are a different size (smaller in length) then what came on the car originally. So the oil quantity might not be the same. A small amount though, for sure :)

Thanks guys for your responses.

Thank you. Very interesting reading. I think my dipstick is a replacement as there is not a part number anywhere on it.

Vince there is a possible CRG report in the works on dipsticks. Does yours have a brown tip?
-
Yes, it has a brown tip.

The original dipstick did not have a number on it. The replacement does also should be brown plug on the end just like the one you said yours has. Post a picture of it with measurements. I would look at the tube or oil pan!

Finally got around to getting my '67 Camaro out as the weather is nice now, and I don't garage it at my home. Here are some pics of my dipstick. It measures 22 inches exactly from the tip to the top of the circular handle. I did find out that when my dipstick is inserted into the tube like most are (with the circle loop facing away from the engine) it reads a half quart low. But when I look at the backside of the dipstick it measures to the full mark on the opposite side. If I insert the dipstick (with the circular loop facing toward the engine) it measures full on the side with the add and full markings. I think I answered my original question.
