Title: 70 Z28 pad engine pad

Hi Everybody,

I'm looking at a '70 Z28, with what is claimed to be it's original LT1. Gearbox is not numbers matching. VN built. 0010 casting code, but I have been ALL OVER the block and there is no block casting date to be found- anywhere, and they're pretty easy to find. That got me suspicious, so the seller allowed me to clean off the paint on the pad. The VIN matches, engine assy. date lines up with the cowl tag close enough (no build sheet, and no protecto,) and it's obviously correct suffix, but I'm somewhat skeptical of the broach marks on the pad. They're deeper than many that I've seen, I can catch many of the lines easily with a fingernail, and many are not running at perfectly horizontal angles, they're slightly irregular. I'm thinking a resurfacing and re-stamp. Thoughts?

Those 'marks' are totally UNLIKE any broach marks I've ever seen!   :)

I would NOT consider purchase of that car based on the information you've provided!

Me too, and I've looked at lots of pads over the years, but wouldn't consider myself an expert, but this one really didn't look right. Thanks!

Pictured are a 70 LT1 vette engine and 71 LT1 vette engine -they along with the 70 Z28 engine were all cast - machined - and built at Flint thus the broach marks should look similar.

FWIW - When questioning suspect stampings from the 70-74 time period -
There are quite few very good examples of 70-72 LT1 & 73-74 L82 vette engines which have never been apart never been out of the cars which to compare to suspect examples out of F bodies from the same time periods.
IMHO the Camaro hobby is ahead of the NCRS guys when it comes to recognition of pads broached and stamped at the factory. -

With the NCRS now accepting Camaros and Chevelles my hope is they are not going to accept pads as legit which have already rejected as forgeries at MCACN - Supercar Reunion - Camaro/Chevelle Nationals. I only say this because - In my short time in the NCRS I have seen quite a few pads being referred to as original which I would reject outright as rebroached and stamped... the stamping may be PERFECT - it's the absolute fresh broachings on a 80k mile car with a rebuilt engine which bring the questions. Convincing me that every instance of this occurring is legitimate and that the factory did them ALL would be a long hill... READ- A REAL LONG HILL TO CLIMB!!!
