General Discussion / Re: SPARK PLUG WIRES

JohnZ covered the different quarters here:

I was thinking mine may be original, but maybe they are repros. My wires say 2Q and 3Q on them which I assume is 2nd quarter and 3rd quarter, which seems right since I have a 08C car. Do you have a choice of what date your wires say with reproduction wires?

Decoding/Numbers / Re: Northern CA 68' Z/28... Real?
« on: August 07, 2012, 10:12:05 PM »
Ed, I think you correct on the repo tach, colors are pretty dull, compared to my original.

Danny, if you want to go look at it just to go look at it, can you get the VIN and the trim tag info for me? Also the VIN on the engine pad. I can't see the last few numbers.

As for it being a real Z, the chances are doubtful. Yes, it has the 6k tach, but it appears to be a repop, and the gauges are 70's Nova. That and the small aftermarket tach at the lower part the dash tells me it's not working, so it probably didn't even come with the gauges. The steering wheel is hard to tell, but it may also be a repop. The horn button is for sure. The woodgrain radio bezel's from a Firechicken and the front and rear spoiler has more than likely been added. Check for the larger diameter torson rod in the trunk for that. Aftermarket shifter and cheapo traction bars as well.

Check for the 4 piston calipers and 12 bolt. He says it's got a 3.73 posi axle, but he didn't say if it's a 12 bolt or not. See what the VIN is on the transmission and if you can get at it, what the axle code and date are.

It's currently at 18k, which is about right for a car that's not really a Z. I wouldn't go too much over that unless he can prove what he says.

Restoration / Re: 68 Z28 Front Coil Springs, Which ones?

LOL

I'll probably go with the ones the are built to GM Specs.  What sucks is, I'm still a long way off from install. I'm trying to get everything laid out, ready, and cataloged before I start on the body. I like having all the items ready to go for the final assembly, always hated tracking down those last pacing items.

Thanks for the info.

Chick,

My car had basically sat for 25 years with the weight on the wheels, so the original springs were toast.

Ed,

I've been looking at Classic, HBC, and Rick's; they basically list the same info/spec's, might all be the same manufacturer.  Whenever I see the terms; Factory Correct or made to GM Specs, in regards to repo items, my skin crawls. :-\

Thanks Ed.

It was yours and Chick's posts that helped me go with springs from Bob.

According to Bob his "look and sit right", however, it sounds like, one size fits all for the small blocks. I know HBC and Rick's sell springs based on application/weight added, but I'd like to know if it's worth the difference in price and do they work as advertised.  My leaf springs won't ship from Bob's for a couple of days, so I still have time to order the coils from him, if needed.

That's what I'm hoping. There are enough small block owners on here, that we should be able to come up with a consistant opinion one which ones do the best job, at providing the factory looking ride height.

Restoration / 68 Z28 Front Coil Springs, Which ones?
« on: July 24, 2012, 06:38:55 PM »
I've searched  this forum and TC and haven't found a consensus on the best replacement coil springs to use for a 68 Z28. I decided to replace my original 4 leafs with ones from Bob, at Camaro Specialties; he has a set of coils, but they seem to be a one size fits all.  Any opinion's or experience on which coil spring give the best ride height (factory look)?

I've seen a few post that the ones Jim at HBC are selling are too high?

Thanks,

Paul

Chick,

My 04D Z28, NOR, Has the one at the front of the trans and the one back further into the tunnel. The one at the front is just back from were the firewall and tunnel meet, pass side for both.

Restoration / Re: Two piece brake rotor replacement.

You may need to put some heat to them while using a press, with light pressure, it shouldn't take too much. Also soak them in penetrating fluid.

If you explain that your trying to turn the rotors to keep the car original "for shows" you may get someone to turn them. Like Mike said, most shops don't want to expose themselves to the liability. Really, if your thinking about using them on a driver, I wouldn't turn them below mins, just replace them, not worth the risk of failure and possible liability, God forbid, you injured someone due to bad rotors.

ED, Did all of the Camaros come from the plant riveted? I've seen plenty of Corvettes riveted, not Camaros.

Thanks

Daniel,

It looks like that part number is for a 69 Camaro, front rotor,r single piston. Some of the other sites listed as rear disc, 65 vette. Are you using this with a dual piston, 68 Camaro spindle?

Thanks,

Paul

Daniel, you've found a source for buying just the rotor portion on disc brake two-piece hub/rotor assemblies?  I've seen the repops but always as the full assembly.

Yes Sir I bought mine from Amazon.com for $64.00 for the pair.

What brand/part number did you buy?
