Maintenance / 1969 heater core removal w/ factory Air Conditioning...
« on: October 15, 2013, 08:27:44 PM »
Wow, that lower water hose connected to the heater core on my 1969 Camaro with air conditioning looks like a real beast to get to... I was hoping not to have to remove the inner fender.
Could someone take a look at the service manual to see if the procedure requires inner fender removal ?  Or, if anyone has tackled this fun (not !) job let me know any hints, or shortcuts/suggestions.  Other than the lower hose, the remainder of the project does not look too bad......or, am I kidding myself ?

General Discussion / 1969 dated spark plug wires date format..
« on: February 23, 2012, 01:50:01 AM »
Hi,  I am inquiring regarding the Packard dated spark plug wires that were/are being produced.
I have been told that the date code format that is printed on the wires came/comes in one of two ways.

Examples: 1 - Q - 69  or  1Q - 69     Another example  3 - Q - 69    or   3Q - 69

The difference in the two formats is in the use of the hyphen between the first character and the Q.

Were both date formats used for 1969 dated wires at that time? What is the correct date format for reproduction wires that are accurate for restoration?

Thanks in advance for input on the topic...

General Discussion / Alternator bracket spacer
« on: February 17, 2012, 02:18:21 PM »
Please see picture of spacer located between upper alternator bracket and water pump observed on a 69 Camaro small block.
Does this look correct and was this spacer originally installed at the factory?

Decoding/Numbers / Harmonic Balancer GM part number....
« on: February 09, 2012, 11:16:54 PM »
Greetings.   Wondering if anyone knows the correct GM part number for the correct harmonic balancer for a
1969 350 cu in 300 horse engine?

I was given the part number of 6272222 as correct for this application, but not sure. Any help would be appreciated!

A link to, or listing of, harmonic balancers for 1st gen Camaros would be great!

Thanks in advance.

Maintenance / "Hot Slot" equipped cast iron intake manifold modifications..
« on: February 03, 2012, 05:52:55 AM »
It has been frequently mentioned herein to plug the two "hot slot" holes in intake manifolds used on Q-Jet cars with two 7/16 steel freeze plugs, as a fire prevention measure. Other enthusiast websites have similar recommendations to perform this measure, with the added suggestion to also modify the exhaust manifold heat riser valve by removing the round metal plate from the shaft inside the heat riser.
Is it advisable or nessessary to remove the plate from inside the heat riser when plugging the hot slot holes?
Perhaps JohnZ can chime in on this with his thoughts.
As always, Thanks!

Maintenance / Compression test results...
« on: November 10, 2010, 09:54:57 PM »
Hey...what is the rule of thumb for compression test results? I've heard that cylinders should not be more than 15% variation between the highest compression cylinder and the lowest.
So, if the highest cylinder reads 140 pounds, the lowest should not be lower than 119 pounds.
Does this sound resonable?
Also, if an engine delivers compression test results in the 180 pound range, does this reading seem like a high compression engine that would require premium fuel?
Is there a guide for proper compression readings, such as what should a healthy good old 210 horse 327 show on the tester, or how about a 300 horse 350?
Thanks!

Greetings..

Anyone have experience with agents who will list a car for sale on multiple internet sites for the seller, in exchange for 5 % of the sale price?

Not sure if there is a contract involved, or how this arrangement works.  ???

Sorry if this topic has been started previously, a link to earlier discussions, if any, would be appreciated.

Thanks to all....

General Discussion / Clutch Fork spring attachment point on '68...?
« on: November 11, 2008, 02:28:28 AM »
Greetings, all..

I am installing a Muncie in place of the powerglide on my '68, and am curious as to where to attach the clutch fork rod / spring to the car. One end of rod/spring goes on the clutch fork coming out of the bellhousing, but I'm not sure where the other end attaches.

There is a small hole in the driver's side engine mount, there's another small hole near where the lower control arm attaches to the subframe.

Not sure if one of these holes is the place, or another spot?

Also, I assume the rod attaches to the clutch fork, and the spring to the rod, and the other end of the spring to the frame. Hopefully this is accurate.

Any help here would be, as always, very much appreciated.

Curious if anybody knows what the switch mounted on the side plate of Muncies used in Oldsmobiles (and possibly other makes) around 1971 is intended for.

The switch is screwed into the plate of the Muncie where the most forward shift arm stud enters the side cover.

This was observed on a 1971 Olds 442 with 455 engine and Muncie 4 speed.

Thanks!

General Discussion / '68 Camaro 4 speed starter lockout switch....
« on: November 04, 2008, 01:59:45 PM »
Greetings...

I am in process of removing the floor shifted powerglide from my '68 and installing a four speed.

Wondering what the manual shifted '68s had as far as a switch to prevent the starter from operating when trans in gear and clutch not depressed.

Any details on this are appreciated, thank you.

Hey there....

Anyone know if the '68's with console 4 speed had any kind of boot inside the console to keep the weather outside ?

I know there's a slider, a retainer and an upper seal right at the top portion where the woodgrain plate is. There might be other items at the top portion I am unaware of. (Items that would hold the slider, retainer and seal). Any other items at the top?

But, is there also a boot that attached to the floor, that would not be visable once the console is in place?

A source for these items and a picture, drawing, or diagram of the assembly would be much appreciated.

As always, thanks in advance.
