General Discussion / Proper thermo. Housing for 427 / 435 hp intake
« on: November 25, 2010, 12:02:27 PM »
Need to verify a thermostat housing for a 427 435hp intake.. Looks like a Julian date of 1595 and a couple of back to back "C" s. Also there is a small return spring hole similar to a  660 housing.
Thanks !!

Decoding/Numbers / Re: 69 Z28 Factory Oil Pan Numbers?
« on: November 13, 2010, 01:10:54 PM »
My next project on the list is to identify the oil pans and the timing covers.. Would'ja happen to have a pic of both the timing cover and the oil pan to make it easier on the old eyes??  After many coats of can paint, a bit murky, eh...
Thanks!

Pictured below are the 265 balancer of the left and a 283 unit on the right.  Both are 6 inch in diameter and with years of paint on them, I measured widths of .625 for the 265 engine, and
.780 for the 283 engine.
Check the size of rivets on the 265 model. Can't see p/n 's on them though.  Might be interesting to weigh them..??

Decoding/Numbers / Re: Q-Jet Date Codes
« on: November 07, 2010, 01:21:08 AM »
Gotta ask Q again.. Why are there some 29202 carbs and why are there some 702902 carbs.. I have 2 of the 29202 variety and the date and customer codes are DH 086 9
and the other is DH 098 9  ..  Have another carb for 1969 but this time it is Oldsmobile and the number is 29251 RJ 114 9 ..  Something must've happened in '69 or thereabouts as the carbs that I have dropped the "70" . question is why? ?
Went on and on re. the Olds carb as it has the line code and correct Julian date to be a real 1969 H/O Rochester.  Hard to either prove or dis-prove this fact, but again it was because of something that happened in a specific time frame in 1969 making Rochester drop the first 2 numerics of the carbs.. Happened sooo long ago and maybe records were not kept updated or whatever???

Will take a better shot of exactly where the 3867 code is, 'cause it is not in the usual spot for codings.  Sorry about the angle, my fault. I appreciate the help by the way.

Why are some carbs punched 29202 and others 7029202 especially for year 1969?
What does a GM Line code or customer coding signify ?

Here are a couple more for your viewing pleasure of the 265 block dated Dec 20 1954.  There are punched numbers close to where the "Canada" punch is.
Engine was either a Junior Stock or Gasser from the 60s/70s.  Gonna dig up more info.
Believe I still have the hub tucked away here and if so, I'll clear the hub/balancer mystery maybe up a bit.  I always thought cranks were forged in the early 265/283 days and not cast..
Will measure up the thread starter balancers in the next two weeks and show numbers punched on the outer hub and try'n de-cipher the GM numbers on the rear inner hub.  Could be interesting!
