Hello
I'm looking at a block to replace a CE block I have that spit the wrist pin out and destroyed a bore.
Found this block and I'm curious if some experts can give me their opinion on the DZ stamp. To me it looks legit and you can see the partial vin next to it but the deck surface looks pretty rough.
Thanks for any input

I don't see a DZ stamp. Just a picture of the casting date "L 12 8" (December 12th, 1968)

Oops
I tried to upload 3 pictures.
I'll see if I can upload the correct picture.
Thanks for pointing that out.

Looks good to me. Can you make out the partial VIN next to the suffix? Looks like 9N56?????

I will be going to have a look at it soon.
Unfortunately that's the only pictures I got from the seller.

Ed, I'm curious how the DZ can be so easily seen but not the partial.

Assembly date stamped at engine assembly plant; vin at car plant. 2 different people stamping and one was heavier handed vs the other. Plus it appears the vin was attempted to have been removed at some point.

Call me pessimistic, but i see what appears to be a 2nd set of numbers.....or is it my imagination? I've had Lasik so I see OK.

I always thought that having broach marks on the pad that run perpendicular to the cylinder bores was one of a few good indicators of a legit stamp. It looks to me like someone ran a flat disk on pad or had block decked then re stamped numbers. Broach lines should be straight, not circular. Thats just my observation tho.

It's an original engine stamp.

Usually. Broach marks are now being faked and with most you can tell, but there are some really good ones out there that are much harder to detect so don't use "just" the broach marks to determine a factory pad.

I know for a fact some of heavy hitters selling parts have been restamping for decades and stealing. Some guys think they have legit Chevys but they are not.
-
That pad has been mistreated - gotta see through that...
-
The 2nd set I'm referring to is the area where the VIN is.

Marked where I see numbers…..

That's the partial VIN. Looks like 19N56 something

Yep. Total shame what this hobby has been brought down to.

Looks like the VIN was double stamped. Really hard to see much in the VIN area with that picture.
