Title: Can I get some clarification please.
Post by: David K on September 16, 2023, 05:58:13 AM
After searching and searching and rabbit holing on several threads here for 45 minutes, I give up.
How was this seal applied?
Pre assembly and adhesive before delivery to the assembly line??
Pre assembly and clips before the assembly line?
There’s no indication to “remove adhesive backing”
Thank you in advance.

My car is an 11E.

It’s held on with clips. The later core supports are pierced with holes across the top to push the clips into. Non-AC cars have dimples where the holes are. Non of the repro seals have aprovision for the clips/ pegs. Tough to find…

There was also a thick dense foam seal (3 pieces) between the radiator and core support (2 up top and 1 across the bottom IIRC). I’ve only witnessed it on my old 69 and when restoring the 1st pacer of my fathers we used them from my car on his.  Idk if I have seen them in repo form but I’ve also not looked recently.  That is what’s being called out as #2 in the AIM.  #1 is the top seal for the core support and hood.

Correct, I have the TSB on this as well. It lists the production dates in 68 when this all started. I’ll dig it out… You can see the foam seal in my first pic.

Thanks Steve.
Is the open lip of the seal towards the rear?
I’m wondering if the original seal had adhesive and clips or just clips?
The 69 AIM shows the hole/clip install, so idoes it stand to reason it was installed on the assembly line?
My GM replacement core support from 1993 has dimples, so I surmise it’s an either or over the counter application. The pictures definitely help.

Cook-I’ve got the upper and lower seals already installed.

Steve-Fiber optics look nice. I installed mine last year.

I bought the filler foam from e-bay. The guy cuts it from a big sheet. Don't remember the seller....Joe

1968 glued down 69 had the clips. My 1968 06A was glued down. Hope this helps.

68 07E just clips, no glue. Yes, open part of the seal positioned toward the engine.

Go to the Restoration section, see The post on A/C seals from long ago.

Thanks again, but here’s the boggle. The seal appears to be already installed on top of the core support, due to no further instructions in the AIM to remove adhesive backing or anything further. So it would have already been pre installed before assembly line. Yes/No?

David, Read my thoughts over on the other thread. IMHO, the adhesive was never used by the factory on this top core support seal. By the dealer, maybe. I’m still convinced it went i to production w/ clips late June per the TSB.

Wow, wow! Learn something new every time I log on to this group. 51 years owned 69’ SS 396 L78, and never knew the radiator support also had a seal kit. Now educate me, is this on all cars, as mine’s being a solid lift engine and non A/C. Thought I had all the bases covered on my restoration. Thanks, in advance of an answer.

It was done on the line. AIM clearly says to remove backing. See item #10.
Looks like they changed to the 69 style late in 68.

Can I get a link to the thread?

Look in the “Restoration” section in this forum. I brought it to the top…

Interestingly enough, back in 1990 or so, I installed one with adhesive backing. When I wrecked the car, it went away. Now I don’t even see anyone selling that style…just the one pins.

Honestly, your car is way too early to have these factory installed. Dealer TSB installed, most likely. Even then it’s got to be pretty rare. Did they install the side baffles rubbers with screws?

L30—To have the pins holding the seal?
No side baffles-Tis a convertible.

Way too early to have everything….unless it was installed by the service department.

Just to clarify I believe "Dimples in core supports" started late '68 model run.

Steve, curious because your 68 is that late of a build, does the core support have the holes for the 69 style condenser?

All the relevant 67-69 TSB's are on site. 68: http://www.camaros.org/library.shtml#doc68
I question that it was a late release. The AIM show a 11/3/67 drawing date and no revisions.
Time to query owners of 68's with AC.

The TSB states 6-19-68. If it was done prior to this date there would be NO reason for the TSB. That’s very clear. The service addition is very different from the factory mount in how things are attached. I cant’t tell you why the AIM shows one thing, but dated at the tail end of 67, you can bet it didnt happen till later in the model year. Survivor Cars I’ve documented as late as April had no provisions for any of the seals and baffles. Late June / July do. Surprised nobody has commented on the other link I posted in our Restoration section. We beat this to death back in 2007….

It has a “68 production run” core support. A/C lines go under the support. It’s never been out of the car.

I am not questioning the originality but was wondering if there was bleed over into 68 being that late into production.  Thanks for the clarification.

Completely understood, I just wanted to be clear that without a doubt, this O7E car came as stated. Pretty close to A final call in 68.

To solve boggle (and thanks for all the good discussion) I found some 3M clear, thin, double sided sticky tape that will work. I'll post when installed.
