Originality / Re: 68 327 / 210 Harmonic Balancer
« on: December 12, 2006, 03:17:28 AM »
Ed,

Thanks for the reply....I placed this question for a friend of mine....

I did some research and found that there is an aftermarket unit made by Pioneer that is supposed to be a direct replacement.....

But.....it's listed as a 6" diameter unit that weigh's 4.5 lbs, whereas the original is 6-3/4" diameter and weighs almost 8lbs.

I personally can't believe that this thing is so hard to get.....it's just nuts.... ???

Either way...what's the difference between a 67 and 68 327 / 210hp balancer?

Mike

Originality / Radiator Petcock
« on: October 31, 2006, 05:27:08 PM »
OK.....here's a goody.....

Has anyone seen the CORRECT version of the radiator petcock used on 1st gen Camaros?

According to an un-named expert, the "ears" are suposed to point away from the radiotor tank, towards the engine, not like the ones sold from our beloved Camaro parts vendors.

The end is also fluted....

Has anyone seen these "correct versions" for sale anywhere?

I have one that is original to my surviving radiator, but looking for one that's got the correct gold cad plating.

Thanks.....

I have a 69 SS350 w/ Cowl hood.

What coil should I have......either the 270 or 293?

I know the Z's get the 270, but not sure about the SS350's....

I want to make sure I get the right one.

Thanks

Restoration / Re: Repop spiral shock absorbers
« on: January 26, 2006, 03:55:07 PM »
I have repro spirals, and I have to say that these are the roughest-riding shocks I have ever driven a car on.

The rear ones almost don't have any give at all............

Incredibly hard-riding shocks....

It's indeed a possibility that the 10-bolt came with the SS.  Probably with a powerglide.

This was discussed in one of the Camaros.net forums a few weeks back....

Maintenance / Idle slow to return to normal.
« on: January 10, 2006, 02:45:22 PM »
I have a 69 SS 350 w/ TH350 trans.  When I hit the gas pedal, the engine reacts well, but coming down to idle takes awhile for it come down to normal...approximately 5 secs, sometimes more.

I checked all my vacuum hoses and found no problems.

I checked my vacuum advance and weights and it all worked normally.

Any other suggestions?

Nothing else is hung up in the linkage....could it be dirt in the carb???

Seems pretty strange. ???

General Discussion / Re: 10 million dollar car show

The story goes that Smokey was asked by GM to make hemi heads that could be used in tandem with the cross ram to produce more power, to help Roger Penske / Mark Donohue during their Trans-Am stint.

Since the results were disappointing, the project was shelved by GM and the five or so sets that Smokey made supposedly went back to GM engineering.  It seems a few sets "made it out".

That's the story I read in a magazine article a few months back.

I saw a silver Z (probably the same car) with this setup at the Camaro Nats in Carlisle, and it looked pretty wicked.

Man....

For some reason, they are incredibly hard to find.  Since they were used on everything from Impalas to Novas, you would think it was easy to get one......

Not so....I've been looking for almost 3 years now w/o luck.......

I hope you have better luck than me..... :-\

I hope I'm not opening up the preverbial Pandora's box, but I can't find any definite answer on this subject.

None of McNeish's books eludes to this.  I thinking is kind of important to get what's right and wrong.....

Could GM used both ????

I've had people "in the know" tell me different things......

Restoration / Trunk Spatter Paint Color for 1st Gens.
« on: November 17, 2005, 07:55:15 PM »
I've been in discussing this issue with a friend of mine, and we both came to the conclusion that the trunks in 1st gen cars are supposed to be Grey & White spatter instead of Black & Aqua which is being touted as correct.  We have access to three totally original, non-restored 1st gen cars, from 67 to 69, and all are grey & white.

If that is what is really correct, then why are places like Ricks only selling Black & Aqua??????

Any takers / suggestions / remarks ???
